A volcanic eruption which Mans attempts Iceland, will be part of National special Wednesday on PBS. a fishing village in to volcanoes will be the subject of a National Geographic special at 8 p.m. Wednesday on KUED, Channel 7. New ideas about the causes of the earths periodic convulsions will be explored in Born of Fire. The special looks at five examples of volcanic and quake activity, demonstrating how each is connected to what geologists call the theory of plate tectonics. Plate tectonics maintains that the earths crust is made up of 12 major jagged-edge- d plates and a number of minor ones which tie together like the pieces of a jigsaw puzzle. The pieces are in continual slow scientists say, crashing motion, together and pulling apart, driven by an underlying fiery-ho- t layer which is still not well understood. Earthquakes and volcanic outbursts are two results of this interaction - quakes when the plates grind together, volcanoes when they pull apart, allowing the molten layer to spurt out. For this doumentary, National Geographic looked at five areas of extraordinary activity - Californias San Andreas fault, Iceland, Djibouti, Japan and Santorini. Two giant plates grinding unevenly past each other makes Up the San -- heat and light to residents. The Republic of Djibouti in East Africa is located at the confluence of three great crustal plates. The seams between two of the plates are filled with water - the Gulf of Aden and the Red Sea. The third is slowly starting to fill and scientists believe that East Africa may one day be separated from the rest of Africa, creating a new continent. Japan is in one of the earths most active seismic areas, averaging one major quake per year. As a result, the island nation has one of the worlds most sophisticated and expensive earthquake preparedness systems. Scientists feel it will be needed. They are predicting a major quake will hit the area south of Tokyo in the near future. When it will hit is questionable. So is the effectiveness of the preparedness system. Santorini is a peaceful island in the Aegean Sea off the coast of Heralded Pianist Will pressure builds up when the plates lock together. When they suddenly unlock, a major earthquake occurs. The largest hit San Francisco in 1906 and Los Angeles in 1857. Scientists are predicting another occurrence in the next 30 years. As one scientist notes in the show, Sometime in the next 30 years doesnt mean 30 years from now it could mean today or tomorrow or next week. Volcanoes are active in Iceland, n which is on the tip of the underRidge, a 46,000 mile-lonwater mountain chain formed as two giant plates pulled apart. Molten magma that flowed through the opening was cooled and solidified by seawater, forming the Volcanoes have been active lately.
