Most high school baseball coaches with just three seniors on their squad would be singing the blues. But not Taylorsville highs Ron Rushton. His Warriors are young, but every starter is already entitled to wear a letter jacket. Nor does Rushton complain about the tough league his team plays in Region Two where top to bottom are some of the states finest teams. Itll make better players of the kids, he says. After beating Cyprus 17-- 9 and in a pair of Granite tests, the Warriors ran up against Brighton Monday in the league opener for both squads and came up on the short end, Again Rushton showed his class. His team made six errors, but the Warrior coach said simply, Were going to play better than that. A three-ru- n fourth was the key for the Bengals, who took advantage of four walks, a key error and a base hit to come from behind. With two out in the seventh, Davis and Kay drew walks, with Davis scoring on a Littlewood single. Littlewood stole second to put the tying run on second, but Brighton ended the threat by forcing a ground out. Jonny Walker was the losing pitd inncher, going three and ings, giving up five unearned runs; sophomore Wayne Arroyo came on in relief. Darren Evans is the lone senior on the pitching staff. He is joined by Walker, Brian Harrell, Chris Davis and Greg Case, all juniors, and sophomores Arroyo and Jim Orwin. Case and Davis are southpaws. Second baseman Kay is the only senior in the Warrior infield. Walker plays first, backed up by George Back-to-bac- Grizzle and sophomore Jerry Taylor. The third baseman is Vinne Brown, with Ron Clark also available. Littlewood is the shortstop, with Tye Olson, a sophomore, in reserve. As in football and basketball, the region looms as the toughest, top to bottom, in the state. Others may have one or two teams that rank with the states cream, but in Region Two, weak sisters are few. The Cougars are against the weeks foes and against the weather. Weather was threatening to cancel the league opener at Alta yesterday (Wednesday). The Cougars are slated to host Brighton at 3:30 Tuesday. Cody Skinner, suffering from a shoulder injury, is the lone senior hurler and will be hoping that juniors Jimmy Mitchell, Greg Carver and Rick Medina come on to help out. Senior Ray Newton is available for relief duty. A trio of sophomore hurlers is expected to see mainly jayvee action. They include Joey Quintana, Rick Wiles and Dino Santistevan.
