Julie West, an eighth grader at West Lake junior high and Paul Voss, an eighth grader at Bonneville junior high, captured top honors and will represent the district in the state spelling bee on April 15. Bennion elementary fifth grader Jennifer Merrill was accorded third place. Participants in the district bee represented 72 elementary and junior high schools, with students ranging from fourth through eighth grade. He will be addressing the special problems of soil in the Magna area which has a heavy concentration of alkali and salt and will direct gardeners how to condition the ground. In addition, he will instruct them on which plants are the most hardy for the soil conditions and talk about the planting and care it takes for a successful lawn. He will also talk about varieties of fruit trees that grow well in this area and how to protect them from insects and disease. Since timing is an important part of gardening, Carpenter will explore the subject of the different garden vegetables and the best time to plant them for the greatest success. He will also talk about crops that can be overlapped for a continuous crop of vegetables and those plants that shouldnt be interchanged in the same soil.
