Show ES ‘Manof No Importance’ Dreary, Despite Finney’s Performance Barrymore Comes UpShort In Too-Familiar ‘Mad Love’ #1 after she overdoses on sleeping Mad Love Matt springs Casey from the hospital, and the young lovers A tough subject gets a melodramatic onceover in this teen drama. By Sean P. Means THESALT LAKE TRIBUNE In “Mad Love,” a teen runs awaywith his girlfriend, onlylater to learn she suffers from clinical depression. Viewers of “Mad Love” will be able to empathize — the movie's mood swings are even more abrupt than the character's. Matt (Chris O'Donnell) is a typical Seattle teen readying for college. Then a newgal, a free spirit named Casey (Drew Barrymore), moves in across the lake. Soon she’s encouraging him to play hooky, and evensetsoff the fire alarm to spring Matt from his SAT exam. The parents nowgetinvolved. Matt’s single father (Kevin Dunn) worries that Matt is abandoning his responsibilities. Casey's folks ban Matt from seeing her, and they puther in a psychiatric ward (shown largely through MTVready montagesof highway vistas and bedroom closeups) takes some dangerous and disastrous turns as Matt discovers Casey becoming obsessive, nervous and out of control. Director Antonia Bird does for clinical depression what she did for Catholicism in her controversial “Priest”: cheapens a serious topic for the sake of a tawdry melodrama. Bird runs her characters through the emotional wringer, but there’s a predigested, we've-seen-this-before quality to the effort that rendersit useless. Thefilm is also donein by Barrymore, whois clearly out of her element. Barrymore possesses a sweet face anda pixielike personality, like Meg Ryan gone punk, BARGAIN.
