Show Blo Teen-Ager Revived After Lightning Strike @ Continued from B-i hero saga unfolded Wednesday afternoon along the foothills of the Stansbury Mountains, where an earthen dam captures runoff to form a small body of water called Grantsville Reservoir. Sullivan and his buddy, Jason Clark, had gonetheretofish after Grantsville High School let out. Fortunately for them, so had Mair and his 67-year-old brother, Melvin. There also was a man from Tooele whose name escapes everyoneelse involved in this story. Just before 3:30 p.m., a storm bojled over the Stansburys. The Mairs retreated to the safe, dry confines of their van. But the teén-age boys stayed out, not 30 feet away near the water’s edge. ‘The clouds camein real dark. The lightning was vicious. We were wondering ‘Why don’t them ghys get in out of the rain.’ They weregetting wet, standing behind their pickup with their poles in the water,” Melvin Mair recalled. Maybeit was because oneof the few things Sullivan can remember about Wednesday, his mother said, is that he had just gotten a bife after a slow day offishing. ‘Whatever the case, the next thing Daniel Mair knew, “I saw road. It was her son in the van. OBITUARIES “Tcan’t even tell you what I was afraid to see in there,” she said. “Tyler couldn't see at that point and was really disoriented. He knew my voice but couldn't see me. He didn’t know Sgt. Hatch. He didn’t know the EMTseither, and he knowsall of them.It was awful. I wentin and tried te get him to acknowledge me. One of the police officers backed me off and they got him onto [an ambulance]. I went back and just talked to him. He was pretty combative, scared, cold andwet. Sullivan's condition improved as he was raced to Tooele Valley Hospital. He regained feeling in his legs. He wiggled his toes. At one point he said, ‘Mom,is that yourvoice.’ ” A battery of medicaltests at the Tooele Hospital and the Intermountain Burn Center at University Hospital in Salt Lake City showedthat Sullivan had suffered no major organ damage. Thelightning bolt, his mother said, apparently had followed the water on the boy’s body rather than entering him. Darkened images of the current’s movement “He [Sullivan] was dead. I felt for a pulse on his neck. He wasn't breathing. There was nothing,” Daniel Mair said. “The other guy said, ‘Let’s see what we can do.’ After he pushed five or six times andI breathedinto his mouth, the boy started gasping. Three or four more and he reached up. I just said, ‘Stick with it boy, we've got you back now. The men knew they had to get Sullivan off the beach. Lightning was still striking all around. They hauled him to the Tooele man’s van and hefted him into the back, a taxing effort considering Sullivan is a big boy, weighing upwards of 200 pounds. They drove toward Grantsville. Partway back, they met Hatch, whohadbeen notified by another witness. “{Sullivan] was conscious but incoherent. He didn’t know what wasgoing on,” the police sergeant said. “I tried to keep him calm. I just talked to him. I said, “Tyler, this is Bob. You're doing fine. Just keep talking to me.’ “He was definitely in a lot of pain.I just tried to keep his mind off the pain. He held my hand. We joked around little bit. I told him we’ re trying to find his mom.’ His mom wasin the Grantsville Clinic ambulance rushing to the scene. At first, she never conceived that the victim could be her son. But when Hatch’s message cameover the ambulance radio that the ‘16-year-old male was breathing,’ it suddenly dawned on her. “I knew it was him or Jason [Clark]. They had gone upthere,” Caldwellsaid. “I wanted the driver to go faster, but it was raining horribly.” When they reached Hatch’s police car, Caldwell saw Jason standing in shock in the are visible on the backof his head, down his back, leg and foot. “It burned the back out of his Raiders cap,” Caldwell said, “and the heels of his socks were charcoal.” Buthe wasalive, the worst pain being in his stomach and back where the Tooele man had performed CPR. Forher part, Caldwell is eager to give some generous thanks to the Mairs and the Tooele man. And Daniel Mair cannot wait to meetSullivan. “After he got into the ambulance I went to pieces. I’m still shookup,” he said Thursday.“It’s going to take some more time for meto get overthis, at least until I get to see that kid.” Edith Busico Morrell Donnie Croner Elmo. Thebriefings for officials from Emery, Carbon, Grand and San Juan counties took place in closed sessions that appearedto violate Utah's ‘ings law. That law states that whenever county commissionersget togetherto discuss county business, the meeting will be open. Closed meetings are allowedin certain instances, but a wilderness discussionis not one of them. The Southern Utah Wilderness Alliance (SUWA)tried to obtain a court order blocking Grand County’s 2 p.m. briefing, arguing it was illegal to close the session.
