No Change Due in Roy Police Sold on Propane SHELLEY KANCITIS ' 5 7 Review Correspondent ROY During the spring of 1981 when the price of gasoline skyrocketed, threatening to make driving a rich mans sport, the Roy City Police Department de- cided to switch from gasoline to propane-powere- d police cars as an economy measure. After two and a half years of using propane, Roy Police Chief . ; - Julian Green remains happy with the departments decision. Were pleased with the system. We intend to stay with pro- - . .. pane. Roy initially experimented us-- . jng four heavily driven patrol cars. A study showed the cars 'covered 57,936 miles in a six month period. Based on these figures, the department estimated it would save more than $3,500 if propane where used of gasoline. We didnt see savings imme; diately, said Roy Police Cap-tain Junior Hammond. It cost $1,050 to convert each car. De- spite the initial investment, the : cost of converting the four patrol 'ears was paid back in three ; months. And the savings conitnue. Even though gas costs less now, propane is still 38 cents cheaper a gallon than gasoline. We got a ' little worried last winter when 7 1 - 7. - . . propane went up to 89 cents a gallon, but it came right down when the weather warmed up, said Hammond. Propane will be economical for us even if the spread is only 10 because we have our own conversion equipment. Because of their heavy use, patrol cars are traded annually. City mechanics parts required for using gasoline before the cars are The only cost to us is labor and a $70 kit to convert the new cars to propane, said Hammond When the Roy Police Department made the decision to use propane, it was told the cars might lose power. Weve seen just the opposite, said Hammond. We had a car on gas that was pulled out because it ran poorly. After converting it to propane, it tested out as having a 25 percent increase in performance. He partially attributes the increase to the legal removal of devices are not required. Other benefits of using propane are a 40 percent increase in sparkplug life, fewer oil changes and less engine wear. When we decided to make the switch, we thought our biggest problem would be selling it to the troops, said Hammond. Once they got used to the sys d. tem, its been ok. He said there have been no driving problems attributable to the use of propane. Although propane has been used as a motor fuel in Europe and Asia for more than 80 years, it is a relative newcomer to the United States. Hammond said he periodically receives inquires from police departments throughout the country about the Roy Police Departments experiences with propane. The Roy Police are not the only Lakeside area propane users. Davis County, Davis County Schools, R.C. Willey and Hill Air Force Base van pools all use propane in some or all of their vehicles.
