Effects of Family Changes on Children Studied by Educator A knowledge of how family .changes affect children could ; ' lead to a new understanding of' how to help them cope with; emotionally turbulant situations, So said Dr. William H. , McVaugh, a clinical child psychologist and professor of psychology at Weber State College.1 McVaugh is beginning a study that will take a long term look at what family changes do to a childs emotional and. personal development in terms of personality changes. He said that the study is the first of its kind since the post World War II era and will hopefully supply psychologist, educators, the legal system and parents with needed information : about children. Lean. who want to develop useful employee programs. I want to be able to follow families longitudinally for about five years and Ill be looking at what types of homes and parents produce what types of children. If we can understand that then it will lead to preventative planning, he said. McVaugh pointed out that the structure of the family has changed drastically from the industrial post WWII period when most of the child studies were done. Now the average family irioves once every three or four years, 50 percent of all marriages can plan on ending in divorce,, one half of all the kids will spend a major part of their childhood in single parent homes, and approximately 75 percent of all mothers today are working compared to 15 to 20 percent in 1950. McVaugh also noted that modern families live in much smaller homes or in condominiums, and abuse and incest are showing significant increases. We have to find solutions for today; we cant go back to the past and I want to find ways to make child raising as effective as it can be, he said. loas Famous REGULAR School Boy USDA Choice RED, GOLDEN or JONATHON t-bo- ne STEAK GROUND) beef Choice .
