We are seeing a family with a problem, said Megan Hamblin, a staff member at ADAPT, St. Benedict Hopitals treatment program for chemical-jj- y dependent adolescents. Studies show addiction is frequently a symptom of a wide range of family problems such as psychological, physical or sexual abuse and marital difficulties. Alcoholism is not just a disease in itself. Its often a symptom that something has broken down in the family, said Hamblin. She said some families ignore other problems and use the alcoholic child as a scapegoat If the family is not treated, parents can actually try to sabotage treatment by doing things like making alcohol easily available in the home. Dr. Marie Schrader, a psychologist at ADAPT, said a crucial part of the centers program is family therapy. When a child enters the six-t- o eight-wee- k residential program, it is mandatory that parents attend therapy sessions. There is no such thing as, Fix my kid up, but dont talk about me or my marriage. Schrader noted several trends found in families of chemically dependent adolescents. Over SO percent have family histories of alcohol or drug abuse involving parents or grandparents and a large percentage have troubled marriages. Another significant characteristic is a high degree of breakdown in family roles. Parents act like children and children often as- Many of our clients have had problems since they first entered school. Typically they began experimenting with drugs or alcohol at age 12. Usually an older sibling or friend exposed them, said Schrader. ADAPT, which is located in Roy, provides a highly structured program based on a tough love" philosophy. How cat parents tell if their child is using dnigs? A common sign is a continuing, negative change in behavior patterns such as a sociable child becoming withdrawn or a formerly good student who starts filling classes. Schrader suggest parents talk to their childs teachers. Compare notes. See if the child is also acting out in school She stresses the importance of consistent parenting occurs and children live in constant chaos, often literally raising themselves. Hamblin. As the childs troubles increase at home and school, parents are forced to admit something is wrong. The first thought is usually not to seek help from trained people, said Hamblin. The first thought is to keep it within the family. Parents think, 'If we love them enough, if we do this or that, then we can solve the problem. As parents enter what is described as the home treatment phase, they try a variety of approaches that may begin with calm, loving discussions and culminate in withdrawal of privileges and constant surveillance of the childs activities. Parent child interactions eventually deteriorate into angry chaos providing the addicted teenager with one more excuse to drink.
