Show 10A Lakeside Review South, Wednesday, Sept. 21, 1982 V IM JuV Lawyer Tells UAW e;r Crimes Caused .by Porno 'RUTH MALAN to get the pornography market in the home. Harmer quoted the U.S. Surgeon General as saying that the number one medical problem in the United States is the spread of violence. The U.S. has 10 percent more violent crimes than in Europe and a 7 percent higher rate in sexual assault. Review Correspondent John L. ,;KAYSVILLE .Harmcr, former Senator from California and private lawyer, addressed the public in a meet ing against pornography which .was sponsored by the Utah As .sociation of Women. ; In his address, Harmer ex- plained that most people in Utah know little about pornog- -' raphy and they want to know nothing about it. , Pornography is one of the biggest businesses in the United .States, he said. It's a $7 billion a iyear industry, with a 70 percent ( He said from 1933 to 1983 the U. S. population doubled while rape went up 700 percent. One out of four rape cases are reported, and one out of 20 gets a conviction,' he said. Harmer explained that pornography involves sexual fantasy, is unrealistic and promotes homosexuality. He said it is raw, crude, and often violent. As the viewer tires of watching this type of, pornography he demands more of a shock, and then even profit. Harmer claims the Adult Film Association of America holds i annual conventions and at the 1977 convention at Las Vegas, the association activated a plan animals become involved, becoming sadomasochistic. He reported a study done with two control groups of children. One group had normal t.v. exposure while the other watched very little t.v. The children were shown pictures of violence. Those with normal exposure had minimal reaction while the reaction of the others forced the emotion indication needle off the chart. In 1981 pornography was made available for sale and rental on video cassette, Harmer continued. When RCA, a subsidiary of CBS, came out with the video disc they declared that they would not sell pornographic material, but according to a recent Wall Street Journal, RCA currently has 1,500 titles of soft pornography and has purchased' the right to provide hard core pornography. Harmer also said that for five years the market catered only to adults and is now opening to the 15 to 19 year old market. He said pornographers build up an appetite with sexually explicit material to desensitize them, and then come in with the hard material. GiveThanks. FARMINGTON Davis School District officials are Control officials Sept. 14 that district and city officials have arrived at three plans for the field, one of which will be used. The district is waiting to see if ihe county will make funds available to help with improvements to the field. The commission, on the other hand, has delayed a decision un- -; til after a $12 million bond issue is decided by voters in an Oct. 4 flection. If the issue is approved ' by voters, some of those funds could be used to help the dis-- 1 ball field. City officials, however, support a plan to create an open stream channel to run between the power station and the high school property. A third plan, which neither side seems to favor, is to place a big culvert under the football field that would be big enough to handle practically anything, White said. White said it would be costly to create the open channel. The city, however, likes that plan because they have real estate and other considerations that are important to them, that would , . trict. In the meantime, the district has temporarily patched the field and left the culvert intact. . Money raised by this barbecue and other donations are being gathered to help these flood victims. Brimhall said he will begin filling the barbecue pit with firewood on September 23, and will light the fire that evening. Wood will be added as needed until several feet of hot coals are in the bottom of the pit. On Saturday, racks of top sirloin roasts will be piled on top of the hot coals and then covered with a quarter inch steel plate, and left to cook throughout the day. The roasts will be removed as needed.
