Emery was born and raised in Salt Lake City, but graduated from Davis High School. He earned his bachelor degree from Weber State College and a masters degree from the University of Utah. He began his teaching career at J.A. Taylor Elementary in Centerville, teaching the fifth grade and remedial reading. He later taught special education and was coordinator of special education for seven years. Before 0:.; coming to Morgan Elementary he served five years as principal of Centerville Elemental Emery is a avid tennis player and enjoys all sports. He has coached a little league baseball team for years. ;After spending 16 months in Korea in the Army he completed an LDS Church mission to the Western States. . He is married to the former Lana Hall of Farmington and they are the parents of six children. Thats a question often asked by parents when children start school. The answer, according to Linda Byram, kindergarten teacher at South Weber Elementary, is when they are ready. Some know the alphabet and some dont; we try to meet the needs of each child and their individual reading readiness. The Ginn reading program is a new method of teaching begin-in- g reading by stressing phonics, that is, decoding a word. According to Mrs. Byram, the letter activity by role playing the story again, discussing what kind of characters there are, what they did and what part of the story is reality. Activities to help bring meaning to the words can be ad- ded such as songs, making puppets and coloring in books. The children then progress to understanding the letters. They begin by reviewing what they have already learned. The new concept is taught by showing the form of the letter, how it looks, how to write it.
