Show C.B The Salt Lake Tribane, Sunday, July 19, 1970 Attitude Causes Many Problems. Hemophilia Bleeders Disease B Barbara Springer Tribune Medical Writer Called the disease of kings" because Queen Victoria transmitted the deadly trait to Russia's Romanovs and a is a hereddozen other descendants, hemophil itary disease in which the blood does not dot normally. Clotting is slow and bleeding is difficult to control. It is discriminatory, afflicting only men. Women don't suffer from the malady, although they do transmit it to their male offspring, at least one generation being skipped in each direct line. Hemophilia, the bleeders disease, usually is discovered when the baby is circumcised, explained Mrs. L. Howard Marcus, founder and president of the Hemophilia National Foundation, Utah chapter. She estimated there are at least royal-bloode- son, th hemophiliac's bui hick a clotting protein known as antihemophilic factv r lAHFl or globulin (MIG), also called Factor VIII Since all normal blood contains AHF when fresh, transfusions are an obvious answer. However, the volume needed may amount to several pints daily which is more than the patient's system ran stand if the treatment has to be repeated often and it usually docs. There a No is the risk of hepatitis infection or severe allergic reactions. It wasn until 19t55 that a technique of fieezing, thawing and centrifuging fresh plasma to concentrate the AHF was developed at the Stanford University medical school. In its frozen state, the concentrate could be kept indefinitely and could be quickly processed for intravenous infusion in a solution averaging 10 to 20 times die potency of plasma. Another 50 Utah families who have at least one member who is a hemophiliac. With mild forms, the disease may only be discovered after a severe injury or operation. In more severe cases, the hemophiliac may bleed after almost any activity. For example, a man swinging a golf club may cause bleeding to start in a big muscle. Or bumping against a chair may cause bruising (rupturing of small blood vessels). Normal blood clots in about 10 minutes. A hemophiliac:, blood can take 30 minutes or more to clot. Hence, a relatively insignificant cut can lead to bleeding lor days and simple operations, such as pulling a tooth may be Mowed by uncontrollable bleeding. The most severe problem is bleeding into the joints which frequently results in permanent crippling. Because of a factor trans- - tied from mother to genetic AHF concentrate was later perfected which is 30 to 50 times as active as plasma. However, some problems still remain with the concer trates. The biggest problem is supply, explained Mrs. Marcus. More donors definitely are needed. Cost also is a factor. For a person with a severe case r hemophilia, the AHF concentrate coupled with the attend,: costs of hospitalization, ambulance service, doctor bills, phw-toa- l therapy and such frequently needed items as biace-- , crutches and wheelchairs can cause the hemophiliacs anuM or more. And the costs ate expenses to skyrocket to $10,000 only partially covered by health insurance. Boys with hemophilia need vocational or professional training especially suited to their needs. There is no such program in Utah, Mrs. Marcus said. r' ft Refrigerator Savings You May Never See Again SAVE 61 .95!l Penncrest refrigerator freezer with ice maker.
