The local author has combined early Provo history with fiction to make "The Earthkeepers" a book to read and Perhaps the book's greatest strength comes from Mrs. Brown's ability to make her characters strong without being saintly; and good without being pious ... most of the time. The novel is about Mormons, yet the religion is only one aspect of their stories. She skillfully writes about pioneer hardships that were indigenous to pioneers, Mormon or otherwise. She has written the saga of the Eastman family and the Indians who lived with them. The characters are fictional, but many of the events in their lives were real. Mara Eastman, a primary character, is a shallow young girl when the story begins, and matures into an admirable woman. Mara holds the book together as her life becomes important to each central character. Vital also to the story are Spirit of Earth and Rain, Piute Indians who live with the Utes. Whites massacre the male tribe members near Provost Hole, and the women and children are brought into town. Spirit and Rain are given to the Eastmans. Spirit, the mother, retains Indian traditions and ideas, but her daughter Rain adjusts to living happily among the whites. She retains her mother's slhabits, though, ovenly housekeeping and her mother's admirable ability to nurture children. Utah Valley history comes alive when seen through the eyes of the Eastmans. Among the actual happen- - ALE Vhilo They Last! Twin Size Coff oo fi End "r Full Size ran. The reader sees Provo change from a sparse fortified' settlement with a tenuous grip on the soil, to a growing town, its future bright and permanent. Though personal tragedies are numerous (this reader kept asking who was going to get killed or maimed next?), there are always characters whose lives represent hope. "The Earthkeepers" should have particular interest to Utah readers who can identify events and places. Mormon writing is maturing.
