Show Page 24-T- HERALD. Provo. Utah. Sunday. April 6. 1980 HE 'U' Architecture Students former Design Problems of Towers The skylir i of Salt Lake City would resemble Manhattan if a project by a class of architecture students at the University of Utah ever became reality Fifth and sixth year students enrolled in Professor John W. Sugden s studio workshop created drawings and models of skyscrapers to learn about some of the unique design problems involved in high-ris- e buildings. Most students chose downtown Salt Lake locations as "model sites' for their creations. To complete the course, each student had to submit a site plan, a schematic of a drawing showing a building 18 to 80 stories high, floor plans to allow for various uses, drawings of architectural details such as joints, and a model of the building located on a landscaped site. The students were expected to include design features to minimize natural hazards such as fire, earth quake and high wind They had to provide for multiple usage within the same building, such as apartments, office and commercial space. Light control, energy conservation and easy access were other considerations "I Mas delighted with the results. " f Sugden said "In two and months, these students had to complete a job that would take most architctural firms a year or more They did an outstanding job in the brief time alloted " one-hal- "I'm sorry, we need someone with a little more experience." is a sentence often heard by college graduates when they re turned down for their first job. Lack of experience is one thing that is not going to be in Utah State University freshmen journalism major Kurt Kragthorpes portfolio when he graduates Its not even in his portfolio now Kragthorpe 19. a Provo high school graduate, is a sports writing wiz-kithat carries a full load of class work and holds an academic scholarship at s Utah State and it as the assistant sports editor of the daily newthe Herald Journal. spaper in Logan He says he realizes the importance of practical experience in the journalism field and says he is pleased with his field experience combinaclasswork d n cross-sectio- Herald Correspondent Now Set fof Cof eef os Joufnalisl a, USU part-time- one-bloc- k tion When I get out of here, I'll be four years ahead of many other students because the things I do now at the Herald Journal are normal for kids just coming out of college." he said The Daily Herald in Provo was the starting point for his sports reporting-career- . He was a publishing sports writer as early as his sophomore year at Provo High School. "I started by doing odd jobs in the news room and gradually worked up to a sports correspondent I worked a combination of the two jobs all the way through high school," he recalled As "low man on the totem poll." he wrote on every sport imaginable "I took every assignment seriously though, and made the most of it." he said, referring to many somewhat insignificant stories he covered. He did cover some stories that he considered to be of major importance, however. "I made a couple of trips with the BYU football team, because of my father (former BYU assistant football coachi. and sent home stories These trips were to Hawaii. Japan and twice to the Holiday Bowl in southern California." he said USU seemed to Kurt like the kind of place you could get a good education and not get lost in the shuffle of a large number of students That's why he says he came to USU to major in journalism. Kurt has high hopes that his education at USU and his experience as assistant sports editor at the Hers Id Journal will help him to slide into a top notch position when he graduates, as his sports writing in Provo helped him land his job with the Herald Journal. "The publisher of the Herald Journal reads the Provo paper everyday. No doubt my experience in Provo was the key to getting on here," he said. His duties as assistant sports editor and as a sports writer are many. He copy edits stories written by oilier writers, assists with the lay out of sports section and covers many sports events each week. His regular beat is to report on the games and matches of the four high schools in the Herald Journal's circulation area He also covers women's sports, men's wrestling and other minor men's sports at USU. "When the sports editor travels with the Aggies, which is sometimes once or twice a week during football and basketball season, I run the sports desk myself." Kurt said. the most challenging part about taking over for an absent editor is laving out the sports section alone, according to Kurt. Wilderness Center To Travel Locally The Mobile Wilderness Center will make another trip through Northern Utah during a 9Way review and comment period on the Bureau of Land Management's proposed Wilderness Study Areas (W.S.A.). The Center, operated by the Salt Lake District, BLM, consists of a mobile trailer which will visit 11 communities during the comment period. The Center will provide general information about the BLM Wilderness process in Utah and will give the public an opportunity to comment on the recommendation being made for each unit. Units will either become recommended study areas or will be dropped from further study, as a result of this phase. Maps, statewide summary books of the proposed Wilderness Study Areas, and public comment sheets will be available at the center to aid the public in their review. BLM personnel will also be available to explain the process or answer questions. The schedule for the Mobile Wilderness Center is: April 28, from 10:00 A.M. to 2:00 P.M., Payson Located on Utah Avenue; Provo April 28, from 4:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M.
