Show Sunday. April 6. 1980. THE HERALD. Provo, Utah-P- age The latest national and international news from United Press International Police Detain Two in Death Politics: - Reagan, Carter Lead By United Preii InteroationaJ President Carter and Ronald Reagan were favored to sweep Louisiana'! primary Saturday and further add to their large leads in the races for the Democratic and Republican presidential nominations. Meanwhile the candidates took Easter weekend off to relax as they begin a threeweek hiatus before the important April 22 Pennsylvania primary. It was expected Carter and Reagan who most observers now think are assured of their party nominations would win big in Louisiana, a state that has been almost ignored by the candidates. Reagan has spent two days in Louisiana, while George Bush spent five hours. Carter did not campaign at all remaining in the White House as he has throughout the but sent wife Rosalynn. primary season Democratic Sen. Edward Kennedy dispatched his son and daughter for a week. The GOP delegates are divided so the winner which takes all in each congressional district means Reagan could win them all. The Democratic delegates are split based on the popular vote so Carter was more likely to lose a few. Reagan faced Bush in the GOP balloting without moderate John Anderson on the ballot. Kennedy took on Carter. - WASHINGTON (UPI) John Anderson is deciding this weekend whether to remain a Republican, be a gracious loser and build for 1984, or bolt knowing if he runs as an independent he is finished forever in the GOP. No matter what he decides, the choice will go against the grain. A lifelong Republican. Anderson is under increasing pressure from moderates of both parties and unaffiliated voters who want him to become an independent candidate. But if he runs as an independent, he would be turning his back on a party he served for years as a congressional leader even if his own voting record on many issues has moved to the left of the GOP mainstream. It would also mean permanently cutting GOP ties, for many Republicans have let it be known they would not look kindly on his independent candidacy. But then and this may be a critical factor few knowledgeable people think Anderson could ever be nominated by the GOP because his philosophy is alien to conservatives who control the party. l 3 - FBI (UPI) agents Saturday arrested a man accused of kidnapping an Oklahoma City bank executive's mother, but the victim is still missing nearly a month after a 25,000 ransom was paid, an FBI spokesman announced.
