And it's paying off. The fiery Pioneer matman has added another gold medal to his collection Saturday in taking first place in the Olympic 200 competition at the University of Utah at his present fighting weight of 123 pounds. Following this latest win Downs was selected as one of only five local matmen to participate in a two week Olympic training camp at Colorado Springs, Colorado, in August. A tournament at the close of that camp will determine a traveling team which will tour internationally in elite freestyle competition later this year, according to Downs. TUCSON. But like gourmets who have patiently withstood countless greasy spoons featuring abrupt waiters, slipshod service and outrageous bills, native fish are not willing to share their finds with invading tourists hatchery fish placed in their locale. It's not easy. "The dominant wild fish the biggest and the toughest are the ones that fight the stocked trout," Bachman said. "But in doing so they become worn out. I've seen wild trout on their sides, gasping from the exertion of the struggle." At first, it seems the fight might be worth the effort. Bachman stood by Spruce Creek, a couple miles downstream from where President Jimmy Carter Ariio-Wa- team championships was the first time in at least the last 20 years BYU has finished among the top 20 nationally. And they did it in real style too. Ranked No. 6 and seeded No. 7 entering the competition, the Cougars combined for 137.50 points, just behind sixth place meet host Louisiana State's 137.90 and ahead of eighth place Louisville's 137.40. There really weren't many surprises to speak of. Perm State, the nation's No. 1 ranked team showed why, scoring 145.50 points to outdistance second rival Utes place Utah. The inter-stat- e collected 144.15 points in an exceptionally strong performance. Utah State, another Region VII entry, finished 13th with 131.45 points. Coach Hill said his team "hit solid" in the action. "Our athletes did an excellent job." In Saturday's individual competition, BYU's Jan Shelley earned an eleventh place in the vaulting event to go along with her seventeenth recorded the day The Cougars also before in had two other team members scoring well in the meet's field of 98 gymnasts, as Deena Robbins took No. 29 and Liz Johns had a 34.20. UCLA's Sharon Shapiro topped all individuals with a 38.00 total. Discussing the squad's performance over the weekend, Coach Hill appeared satisfied, saying the end results were close to what he was expecting. He then added, "It's been a good season." 131 Paysoa Tooele Day and Couches To 114 1- -1 8 15 Manchester 2W Kl i. 85-7- Angelo Robinson led Watts with 15 points.
