Hal Cannon, Folk Arts Coordinator for the Utah 328-420- 1; Cancer Prevention Education Need in Local Communities "Although there's still a lot to learn about cancer prevention? it's tragic how many people don't know or won't do the simple things that can go a long way toward preventing the disease," observes Jeanne Brockbank of Provo, chairman of the Utah County American Cancer Society Crusade now under way. Mrs. Brockbank said that volunteers in the Cancer Crusade will leave nearly 45,000 packets of information at homes throughout the county during the next g two weeks in the annual educational drive. "The American Cancer Society constantly supports research into new ways of preventing cancer, and we contribute to that good cause," the chairman noted. "Community leaders are striving to root out cancer-causin- g substances from the work environment, and we can become active supporters and organizers in this area. "But we don't have to wait there's so much we can do ourselves, right now. The self discipline of not smoking or going with less sun in the summer is a pretty small price to pay for significantly lowering our risk of getting lung or skin cancer." The ACS volunteer chairman notes that although research strongly indicates that diet is related to a number of cancers, the details and final proof aren't yet in. In the meantime, she says it can't hurt and may help a great deal to eat a nutritious, balanced diet low in fats and including fiber. Mrs. Brockbank adds that there is a fine line between cancer prevention and detection of the disease at a very early, often curable stage. "Your doctor can determine whether you are at a higher than normal risk of getting a certain cancer, and then recommend tests that can give you the best chance of discovering any malignancy early. Usually these regular checkups will assure you that you are in good health; they're a kind of insurance you can't afford to do without." She said that more information about cancer Ofprevention is available at the Utah County CS No. 103, 100 60 East South, phone fice, -- 4 Sat. 'Ill 10 Ml Op..
