"I stated it last night and I stated it again. It was a stupid accident," Brune told a news conference, without going into detail about the mishap. The accident occurred when a tanker car filled with more than 13,000 gallons of phosphorous trichloride was struck by a locomotive in a freight yard. Mayor Eugene C. KRGO radio newsman Ray Friess was fired Friday following the release of the hostages and the surrender of the gunmen. Gene Guthrie, owner and manager of KRGO, said Friess had acted irresponsibly by calling the drugstore during the hostage situation and tying up the telephone for 45 minutes while the police were negotitating with the gunmen. "It was an irresponsible act when people's lives time did I tell them I was a policeman." "They may have believed. I was " he added, "and I didn't I didn't do anything to dispell it. But I didn't tell them I was a cop." Friess said the station had no guidelines about calling into hostage situations and he believed he was just being a competative newsman. He said at least one other Salt Lake radio station announced on the air it was trying to call into the store, but the lines were busy. "I think the public wanted to know what was going on in there," he said. Friess interviewed one of the gunmen and three of were at stake," said Guthrie. "There are still some problems out there, but we are satisfied that we will meet our plan," Census Bureau Director Vincent Barabba said Friday. That plan calls for a return rate of 80 percent by April 15, after which field workers will personally contact homes that have not returned forms or submitted incomplete information. Barabba said as of Thursday, 53.4 percent of the forms had been mailed back to the Census Bureau's regional offices. Even more were sitting in mail bags waiting to be logged in and others presumably were on the way, he said. He said officials have not yet noted any difference in the return rates between the short forms and the long forms. How well or thoroughly the forms are being filled out will be seen next week when census workers begin recording the information. Jed Lowy, a Burlington, Vt., nurse practitioner, says the FBI might have used a 1970 census form filled out by his father to obtain information about him. An FBI spokesman denied the charge. Dan Levine, Bureau of the Census deputy director, said he learned about the allegation Saturday from news reports and Monday morning would ask the off to the front. That was in 1918. Friday, Gen.
