Another foot-ba- They're the ones you'll be reading about and saying, "I always knew he would be a great player." Really? Another aspect of the preseason experience is the overabundance of questions to be answered. They come in all forms and range from the sophisticated to the simple. The Univerisy of Utah football team isn't immune to this rampant optimism. And there are many questions in need of answers concerning the quality of team the Utes will be. The word around the Utecampis d that a defense will take the field. Reviewing Utah's defense the last two years, this kind of optimism makes good sense and is safe ll season is already at hand Watching Doug Williams pick apart the Denver secondary en route to the Superbowl title seems like only yesterday. , And it wasn't long ago when all three WAC teams invited to bowl games were getting a holiday helping of humble pie. But it's true, 1S88 football is here and I, like many, am ready. To the fan, the start of a new season means good entertainment, hard hits and tailgating. But to the teams, the arrival of a new season goes much deeper than that It's a breath of new hope. Optimism abounds. And why not? After all, it's the only time during the whole season every team's record is even, Anything is possible. The Falcons could win the Superbowl. Columbia could win a game, maybe even two. And it's that high anticipation of greatness teams carry with them that makes the new season all the more Preseason hype isn't limited to just the teams and the fans, however. All the major sports magazines get their fill of hoopla also.-Thewin and who will fredict who willwho's not. But for hot, the most part it is an imperfect science at best; y P on-camp- us Close to classes and jobs on-camp- us Conveniently located between downtown and ski resorts Parking Johnson of old when he returns to the Utah backfield this year? He thinks so. Utah supporters can only hope so. Arid what about the loss of Martell Slack, Utah's leading rusher last season? How about Byran Bero? Will he be back to : full strength? And what about the new defense players? What kind of impact will they have? So what kind of answers do I have for these questions? I'll tell ya when the season's over. But as for now, optimism abounds. . ; . .; living of . exciting. ; the CONVENIENCE to say. Another safe bet would be Utah's Scott Mitchell leading the WAC in passing this year. Mitchell may be the most promising quarterback to the hit the Utah football scene in a long, long time. Yes, safe anwers to questions like defense and quarterbacks are in supply. But other answers about the '88 Utah football team may be harder to come by Like, will Eddie Johnson be the 0-- 0. ; All much-improve- . Sure, predicting Nebraska and Oklahoma to vie for the Big 8 tide is a safe bet. And picking last year's Superbowl champ to make a return trip to the playoffs isn't so bold either. But the dark horses are out there and the young unknown stars are waiting t to be born. ?.
