That's the question opposing Western Athletic Conference coaches and players must be asking themselves about the University of Utah golf team. In one of the most stunning upsets in recent memory, the Ute golfers brought home from Provo their first WAC crown last May. Going into the tournament, Utah was expected to do as good or better than it had in previous years, but with the likes of UTEP, New Mexico and BYU, the Utes were given little chance, if any, to win it all. But Utah jumped out to an early first-da- y lead-o- ne they never relinquished. But the question remains, how good are the Utes? After all, Utah's golf team operates with a much smaller budget than most WAC schools and features almost all local players. Ute coach Ron Branca thinks he knows the answer. "We know that we are (for coach said. "We just real)," the tenth-yea- r need to go out and prove it on the golf tnri if .i n-- -- Voftor rlavpr arp Via vino outstanding summers," Branca said. "Matt Johnson won the City Parks Open and then the next week won the U.S. Amateur Qualifying. Doug Roberts won the County Amateur and Devin Dehlin won the Tooele Amateur, Wasatch Amateur and was in the finals of the State Amateur." Branca also has a number of other top players who will be battling for a spot on the traveling team, including Jeff Thalman and Brett Glaser. The Utes will also have some outstanding newcomers in freshmen Marty Romney, Jeff Mark and John Tagge. But with so many experienced golfers returning, Branca said it t. is likely these players will "Overall, we'll be much more mature as a team, and we should be able to let people know that we are for real," Branca said. "We're potentially as good, if not better, than last year." Branca said winning the WAC crown has had a "snowball effect" in that course." recruiting top players has been easier and Branca says he's "cautiously optimistic" that the Utes are getting invitations to top about the 1988-8- 9 campaign-a- nd with tournaments they never have had before. Utes return good reason, Tp fouj.pf the Branca feels that should carry over onto led five players? wn6 them to the WAC the golf course as well. "Winning breeds crown as well as a number of other talwinning," he said. Utah starts the Ml portion of its schedule ' ented returnees and newcomers.
