UTEP is not only expected to win the conference, but possibly " the NCAA title --'- ;as well. As far as the track team is considered, the Ute tracksters will be led by hurdler Eric Chesley. The returning senior is the two-tim- e defending WAC champion in Chronicle assistant sports editor On the heels of one of their most successful seasons ever, both the Utah cross ready for an encore performance this year. The common link between these two programs is Coach Mike Jones. During the autumn months, Jones and his staff are busy monitoring the progress of the U. cross country squad. But when winter and spring roll around, Jones puts on his spikes and coaches the track team. "It would be tough to do both jobs if I didn't have such great assistants," Jones said in reference to his duties. The cross country season officially gets underway on Sept. 24 in San Diego. Prior to the trip to California, the Utah runners . will spend two weeks in Big Sky, Mont., training for the upcoming season. "We take these trips to build team spirit," Jones said about their annual retreat "We learn to support each other and cheer each other on. It really builds our team unity." Unity will be the key for the Utah runners success this year. , Last season the Lady Ute cross country team was led !by' senior Celsa Bowman. In her final season of eligibility, Bowman honors by placing captured 23rd at the NCAA Championships. Bowman returns this season as a graduate ' 400-met- Championships in Provo, Clark cleared 12 inches in the high jump to finish second. This was despite joining the track team just a few weeks prior to the meet. Clark is also expected to set a new i school rec64 in the event this year. Last season, Ward developed into a consistent point producer for the Lady Utes. Ward, a junior from Longmont, Colo., is the defending HCAC Champion in the 10,000 meters. Joining Ward in the victory circle was Lady Ute hoopster Brenda Alcorn. . Alcorn won the HCAC title in the high jump last spring in Provo. Alcorn's sister.
