Show Wednesday, August 17, 1988 Chronicle Q Demented minds turn society into n ightmare November of 1986, designed to improve the quality of life for Palestinians living in the territories? Is Hardesty aware that King Hussein has chosen to only continue paying West Bank civil servants employed prior to 1967? Who wlj pay; the salaries, of the 16,000 civil servants employed after 1967? Why doesn't King Hussein close the bridges linking the West Bank with Jordan which allows families on the two sides to remain in contact, and, equally important, allows Palestinian farmers in the West Bank to continue exporting their produce to Jordan and other Arab countries? And why has King Hussein allowed West Bank Palestinians to retain Jordanian passports and citizenship. Is King Hussein concerned that if he closes the borders and makes the Palestinians relinquish their passports and citizenship that the political fever raging in the West Bank will infect the majority Palestinian population in his own kingdom? Is he concerned about losing his West Bank breadbasket? And what if Israel decided to push all of the Jordanian citizens living in the West Bank back across the border into Jordan and then annex the territories? Could any of these scenarios, were they to happen, destabilize the Hashemite throne? live Gaza And what about the Palestinians who in where the religious and economic "intifadah" began? Gazans are stateless. They don't have passports or citizenship of any country. Are they a forerunner to the fundamentalist religious fervor that could build in the West Bank if Jordan chooses to close off the West BankJordan border and Jordanian citizenship? King Hussein has successfully managed to keep the Hashemite crown on his head for over 35 years ruling over a Palestinian majority. Perhaps his present plan is to demonstrate to the PLO leadership the fateful consequences awaiting Palestinians if Jordan were to pull totally put of the West Bank and to bring Palestinians to the conclusion that Jordan is, indeed, an indespensible element in their future destiny. s . . Editon Since when is killing a human being a noble act? In her column entitled, "Women remain victims," Tamara Hardesty tells us that she would not hesitate to kill her husband if he ever cheated on her and would kill Arthur Gary Bishop by torture (Td kill him slowly'') if he.even touched a child of hers. Worse yet, she brags about these hypothetical killings and calls them not only logical but noble! , What we see here is a sick mind which shows a frightening disregard for the value and sanctity of human life. Such an attitude, when pervasive, turns our society into a nightmare where killers like Arthur Gary Bishop are a reality. The Jrony of it all is that even though Ms. Hardesty admonishes women for creating "many of the justifications for violence" on women, she herself displays a mentality which would create a far more violent society for all of us than the one we live in today. I certainly hope Ms. Hardesty's values are an aberration rather than the norm tor today s youth. - Philosophy professor W IMIIII llWh W VKII MVI IW decay in light of fact Editor: After reading Tamara Hardesty's articles in the Chronicle, I'm beginning to wonder just what the politi-- 1 cal science and Middle East studies departments are ; teaching their students. In her article, "King Hussein searches for peace," the title was the only thing about her article I could understand. ; Is Hardesty aware that the Jordanian Constitution holds the West Bank to be an integral part of the Hashemite kingdom and that until this sudden change of heart by King Hussein; the weather on Jordanian television showed the West Bank as part of Jordan. Between 1948 and 1967, the West Bank was an integral part of of the British Mandate of Jordan. The state of Israel allowed the status quo including Jordanian law to apply in most cases. In fact, having visited Hebron in the West Bank from Jerusalem, I traveled on buses still operated by Jordanian companies. Pressure from PLO chief Yasir Arafat has convinced King Hussein to relinquish Jordan's control over the West Bank to force Israel to recognize the PLO as the legitimate representative of the Palestinian people, but why is King Hussein removing promised economic aid? $1.3 Why is King Hussein cancelling Jordan's billion, West Bank development plan launched in . Yup, Utah is a pretty, great state. . Execution for Andrews demonstrates injustice Editor: The future execution of accomplice William Andrews is a good example of racial injustice." Andrews is sentenced to be executed even though he murdered no one. The trial evidence states that Andrews was not present when his accomplice Dale Pierre Selby murdered his victims. Andrews stated at his trial that he was scared to do it, therefore Andrews was reluctant to kill Selby's victims. Because Selby had a gun it is likely that Selby pressured Andrews to pour liquid Drano into a funnel leading to the victims' mouths. In comparison white killer Mark Hoffman, unlike Andrews, received a light sentence considering how heinous his crimes were. Mark Hoffman annihilated his victims by sadistically planting a bomb near the victims' homes. Splattering people to death with a bomb is certainly a far more heinous crime than Andrews' assistance in Selby's murders. Hoffman is a middle-clas- s man who succeeded in charming the justice system into the favoritism of plea bargaining. The death penalty is biased against poor minority groups and the death penalty is very arbitrary and unfair. No judge should be allowed to play God since no human being is so superior to others that the superior judge decides who lives and who dies. If the death penalty is justice against murderers then all murderers should receive the death sentence. Plea bargaining for some murderers is unfair to other murderers. The murdering of legal execution is killing all the same and two wrongs never make a right. The death penalty should be abolished. . , Thomas P. Lightheiser, - j . .
