In her 15 years at Snow College in 0 Ephraim, Utah, Bricker compiled a a 44-- 4 year in led the Badgers to the junior college No. 1 ranking. Pretty doggone impressive at any level of competition. Yet in her first season at the University of Utah in 1987, Bricker and the Utes couldn't find that winning combination, and struggled to a 7 mark. Welcome to NCAA Division I volleyball, coach. Bricker insists that last season's record will be the exception rather than the rule, and this year the Utes will be a greatly improved volleyball team. ' "I see us taking giant strides as a team," Bricker said. "If we can come together, we'll be right in the middle of the conference standings." Such optimism could be questioned by outside observers. After all, the Utes lost seven of 12 letterwinners of a year ago, including four starters. 344-12- record-includ- 1986--whi- ing Gone are outside hitters Lisa Shearer artd Jenni Eyre, who were second and third on the team in kills. And potentially even more devastating are the losses of Lisa Resch arid Cori Arndt, last year's two setters. But Bricker isn't too worried about the situation. She feels the returning players along with the newrecruits will do just fine. "We have four players back who've seen and a lot of action. Lynda Hall is hits' the ball very hard. Leslie Herbertson is a good player, and will be a recoggood contender (for comes Klein Torrie along nition), and if (following an injury last season), she will really be strong for us." Bricker is equally impressed by the new athletes who will be on the Ute squad this year. In all, there are eight newcomers t-l all-arou- two-tim- ch 6-2- nd who will be wearing the crimson and white for the U. this fall. junior college transfers. Lofi Tupuola, a native of Honolulu who played at Eastern Arizona, will take over the bulk of the setting responsibilities. e Tupuola was a in junior college. On the receiving end of some of Tupuola's sets will be outside hitr ter Lani Green. From nearby OgdenV Green played for Northwest Wyoming prior to coming to the U. The Utes have four high school recruits on the team, but Bricker plans to bring them up at their own speed. 'The freshman are good, strong players, but it will take them a while to develop into the system," she cautioned. Serving was one Utah's weak spots in 1987, but Bricker plans on changing that. "We intend to turn it around this year, and I believe it will be one of our strengths," Bricker said. With the addition of Tupuola and freshman Leslie Sims, setting should also be a Ute strong point. Lynda Hall, a senior middle blocker, would like to put last season behind her. Like Bricker, she believes this year will be better-s- he just doesn't know how much. "It will bo interesting to see how we do. I think it a lot depends on how the new the girls fit into the program-especia- lly new setters," Hall said. The Utah schedule includes a number, a good, of top volleyball programs.-"It'tough schedule with a good variety of competition," Bricker said. Among the toughest opponents will be USC, Long Beach State and BYU. Colorado State and BYU look to be the teams to beat in the High Country Athletic Conference. hostUtah opened the season Sept. ing the Lady Ute Invitational.
