Most of them juggle a full class load, a job and children. But the Womens Resource Center has developed a program aimed at making the lives of single parents a little easier. The Womens Resource Center for Single-PareStudents helps student parents cope with the struggles of raising a family alone ana obtaining a degree. It has designed several programs to help housing, single student parents get financial assistance and child care. One of the main thrusts of the project is distributing a pamphlet to all parents. The book includes important information about housing on and off campus, reasonable and reliable child care and health services and hidden scholarship opportunities. "The book includes strategies successful single student parents have used," Bev Purrington. director of the Women's Resource Center, said. Purrington said the group also publishes a newsletter six times a year called Singe Parent Student Notes. The letter announces upcoming events, changes in financial aid requirements and other issues of interest to single parents. More importantly, she said, the project provides free information services for The staff includes four students who are single parent students themselves. The volunteers are on hand every day to offer free advice and assistance to needy students. 'The staff can help the sjngle parent students unravel the complex requirements for social services and financial aid and offer an important support service," Purrington said. The University of Utah Tutoring Center was established to put students in c ntact with tutors. These tutors can not only help students with course material, but also help them succeed in their classes. Located on the the west end on the second floor of the Union Building, the center can help you anytime j between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday through Friday, f To locate a tutor, students simply need walk into the office and tell the staff which course they're interested in receiving tutoring. The staff will then give students a list of available tutors, including their names and phone numbers. I It is up to students to contact the tutors, decide their preference, and set up a time when they can meet. After five hours, the fee goes up to $6 per " TIKE Once students have purchased tutoring time, the center will issue a time card for tutoring sessions. Most tutorials run about 50 minutes. Tutorials can be set up in private rooms located in the center during operating hours or any other place which is convenient. "We can almost guarantee a student will have a tutor for every undergraduate course," said center coordinator Loretta Ray. If a tutor is for a particular course isn't on staff, one will be located within two to three weeks. The center works closely with the departments in choosing tutors. In addition to a 3.5 GPA in the course he or she will be tutoring, every tutor is required to have a recommendation from a faculty member in the department. The best advice Ray could give was, "Don't wait until you're in trouble before you come in for tutoring.
