MB Sat and Sun Matinee 2:30 pml Put It Back Where You Found It by Nan Chalat-Noaker RECORD EDITOR On a recent TV comedy special Joan Rivers received the ultimate compliment from Whoopie Goldberg. "She is the greatest comedienne of all time," Goldberg said, crediting Rivers with breaking new ground for today s female comics. At Saturday night's benefit for Park City's Jewish Community Center and Ecumenical Council, Rivers delivered on that reputation reputa-tion with a scathing hour-long rant roasting everyone from whiny Princess Di to the evening's sponsors who were seated in the front row. It was classic Rivers ribald and unrestrained. And the packed house seemed to love it although one couldn't help worrying worry-ing about how Father Bob Bussen and Sister Karen Stern of St. Mary's Church who turned out to support the event felt about the uncensored nature of the material. Take for instance Rivers' unabashed evaluation of the front row center woman's wedding ring "That's it? That's the best you could do? You aren't Jewish are you." And Rivers' evaluation of Michael Jackson's marriage to Lisa Marie Presley "Is he gay? Oh, come on Utah. Michael Jackson makes Liberace look like a Green Beret!" Rivers had the audience alternately gasping 'I can't believe she said that' and giggling with guilty recognition at her often brutal caricatures of the plight of men and women. No one was spared Jews, Italians and WASPs all received equal rations of ribbing. Utah's own bad girls, the Saliva Sisters, backed up by their band, the Lymph Notes, helped to set the decidedly irreverent tone for the evening. They ran through a set of naughty numbers including an ode to compulsive shopping at Nordstroms and a tribute to the coming Olympics. "The world will come here, and drink our weak beer. We're just as good as Colorado now, that's fer sure." According to Rivers, she was talked into doing the benefit by her lawyer and Park City Jewish Center board member Mitchel Perkiel. "And I can tell you he never worked for me for free," Rivers joked. Perkiel and his wife Lois were among more than a dozen sponsors who contributed "T997raTTtyCafenJar" "A Year in the Life of Park City" February 2-for-l sale two calendars for $13.00 or I for $8.95 free shipping (reg. price $1 1.95) $$ back guarantee 25 colorful photos Fun, descriptive captions Mark Maziarz Photography (80l)649-0002VisaMC i i.'.: '. Others who helped to defray the production costs for the evening, making it possible for all proceeds to go directly to the Jewish Center and Ecumenical Council, included David and Carol Luber of Deer Crest, Michael and Liz Morris of Bank One, Columbia Healthcare and Stein Eriksen Lodge. "We are thrilled to be a part of this. As a business we support a lot of community events but this is really from our hearts as much as it is from Deer Crest," said Carol Luber at the cocktail party preceding pre-ceding the show. Pre-show appetizers appe-tizers included tasting tables featuring fea-turing offerings from some of Park City's best restaurants. Park City Jewish Center President Robert Sacks was delighted by the response to the center's first fundraiser. Although a synagogue is on the group's list of long term goals. Sacks said proceeds pro-ceeds from Saturday's evening with Joan Rivers would be used to offset current program costs. "The event tonight is not really for facilities, the funds are more for operational growth and development," develop-ment," Sacks said. "What makes me happiest is that since its found- Joan Rivers ing just two-and-a-half years ago, we've blossomed from just a seed to this," he added gesturing to the packed hall. Since its inception, the Park City Jewish Center has already established monthly shabbat services, ser-vices, a religious school and has hosted High Holy Day services. Part of the proceeds were also earmarked for the Park City Ecumenical Council, a group of 16 area congregations. The Kimball Art Center opens its newest shows featuring the work of David Chaplin and Linda Lee foster.
