I In a busi ness environment, envi-ronment, you may discos e r that clients or suppliers with which you interact need or require data from you in a format they can use. It pays to ask around. If you are puzzling over nationally national-ly advertised name brands versus locally assembled systems, it primarily primar-ily depends upon your level of experience expe-rience and what type of person you are. If you don't have enough experience experi-ence to begin to diagnose what happens hap-pens when your computer does something funny, a 24-hour, seven-days-per-week help line, coupled with on-site service if needed, may be something it's wise to pay extra to get. Now the biggie: in order to avoid instant obsolescence, smart computer comput-er shoppers plan to upgrade a computer com-puter before they buy it. The computer industry changes ery quickly. The fastest, most up-to-date computer com-puter isn't here yet: it's on a truck somewhere between the factory and the store. But the time to buy a computer is when you need it. not when the next model vou've heard about finallv arrives in six months. Remember, there will be another, faster, one right behind it. Where computer buyers hae an advantage that purchasers of most other products don't is w upgrade-ability. upgrade-ability. To stretch a computer's useful life, you can put in a faster video graphics controller, a larger and faster hard dm e. more memory, or a new processor. As time passes, hard-ware hard-ware will improve, software will demand more, and you will feel the need for more speed. To fend off feeling pressured to get another computer for as long as possible, look for a system that's as close to the leading technological edge as you can afford, and check to see whether the system you're considering con-sidering will allow for expansion and upgrade. Today, large computer manufacturers manufac-turers have discovered the small office-home office and home multimedia multi-media markets, and identified them as the fastest-growmg segments of the industry. The new computers for this segment seg-ment come with CD-ROM dnes. sound card, speakers, a data-fax- voice modem and more. It is powerful power-ful and flexible enough for most general gen-eral uses, easy to set up and operate, and supplied with enough varied software to get a beginner up and running. The price point reflects this aim. Again, most important, be sure that whatever you purchase can be upgraded and expanded. There is just no substitute for doing your homework before you go shopping. Based on the lenders surveyed this week the interest rate on 30-year mortgages remained at 7 875 percent. per-cent. The interest rate for 15-year mortgages decreased to 7.375 percent per-cent and the rate for one-year adjustable-rate mortgages is 6.000 percent. All rates are quoted with zero points and a 1 percent origination origina-tion fee. Ronald Field.
