The press conference is part of a national campaign coordinated by NOW. "We stand united to challenge the discrimination faced by loving, lov-ing, committed couples who are denied the rights and responsibilities responsibil-ities of marriage." said Straight. "When lesbian and gay members of our society are prevented from enjoying the same lawful opportunities oppor-tunities available to other citizens, citi-zens, we see this as no less than an infraction of the Constitution of the United States of America, and it is the same as denying people peo-ple their basic civil liberties, or rights, because of their race or religion." "It is time for Utah and the United States of America to uphold the rights of minorities, women, children, lesbians, gay men all citizens, regardless of who is in the majority." Straight added. "When our society denies basic rights to any group of people, peo-ple, we begin to see those people as less than human. But gays and lesbians are human beings with feelings and desires for commitment. commit-ment. They do not deserve the injustice of anti-marriage laws." Straight points out major employers such as American Express, US WEST, AT&T, Apple, Coors, Hewlett Packard, Levi-Strauss, Sony, Walt Disney and countless others have begun to provide gay and lesbian partners part-ners with the same company benefits ben-efits as straight or married employees. Long distance companies 'slamming' customers US WEST is warning its customers cus-tomers of the most recent "slamming" "slam-ming" scheme. "Slamming" is the term applied when long distance companies steal customers away from each other without the customer's cus-tomer's knowledge. According to Leanne Shay. LIS WEST area manager, the company compa-ny is receiving complaints from Utah customers about calls from a telemarketer claiming lo be with US WEST. "The caller offers combined com-bined billing for your long distance dis-tance and local service and is often very rude and high pressured in hisher approach." Shay said. To help consumers recognize the scam, the caller's opening remarks often include asking if the person in charge of making tele phone service decisions is in. When questioned, the caller also claims that the offer won't change the customer's long distance carri er, which isn't true. US WEST Security is investigating investi-gating the claims to discover the true identity of the telemarketing company andor long distance carrier. car-rier. US WEST will seek legal action against the company or companies. If a call seems to fit the general description of this scam, customers cus-tomers are being asked to obtain a call-back name and number from the telemarketer and then to call Shay collect at 626-5660 with the information. "As yet, we are not in the interstate inter-state long-distance business. More importantly, when we conduct telemarketing promotions, our callers are required to follow a strict script from which they may not deviate. Our approach and script are based on courtesy and respect for our customers and their wishes," Shay said. Preserving Utah's rivers At 7 p.m., Tuesday, Feb. 18, renowned river ecologist, Zach Frankel, will be speaking at the Sundance Screening Room Theater. Frankel is the president presi-dent of the Utah Rivers Council, based in Salt Lake City. His talk will focus on the status of Utah's rivers, including the Provo, and how everyone can get involved in the effort to preserve them. A particular emphasis will be placed on the proposed development devel-opment of the Monks Hollow Dam and the Diamond Fork delivery system. Frankel advocates that the $280 million project will do irrevocable harm to riparian areas, and is one that Utah taxpayers tax-payers can do without. Admission is free and hot beverages will be available. For more information, contact con-tact Eric Vozick at 223-4506 or Julie Mack at 223-4046. m ft ft v ( QUO" ft 7-,. t "UTAH'S QUALITY LENDER" G !
