"Is. 508 MAIN ST. PARK CITY Sterling Scholars are named Cara Wieser writes her way to scholastic honor by Madison Furrh OF THE RECORD STAFF Cara Wieser has a number of talents tal-ents but it is her ability in English that brought the spotlight to her this time. In her high school career she has won the state championship for cross country twice, has won trophies tro-phies for horseback riding, does community service, works for the school paper, interns at the Park Record and now she has been named the English Sterling Scholar for Park City High School. Wieser. simply put. has a passion for English. More specifically she enjoys writing. She said. "English is so important to me. I only applied for English Sterling Scholar because that's what I'm going to pursue pur-sue as a career." Wieser s drive to excel is evidenced evi-denced in her running. She said. "I was state champion my freshman and sophomore years in cross country coun-try Now I do road races on mv own. I do the 5K 3.2 miles." She added, "The 10K races are for boys. For some reason people think boys are stronger than girls." She also competed in the Footlocker National Championships in 1W4. The competition was held in California and she finished 4.3rd in the country as she ran the 5K race in 18:30. Bul'her desire to do her best does not stop there. She said, "I want to do a marathon but I'll probably prob-ably do a half-marathon to see if I die first." Somehow the Park City High School senior finds time to run a business as well. She explained. "I teach horseback riding lessons at my house. My mom and I have a business busi-ness called Tally Ho Farm. We do three day eventing, jumping, and we take the kids to shows. Basically, we're like one big happy family." She is not only a teacher, she is a champion. She modestly said, "My horse won training champion of the year for Utah, Idaho, and a piece of Colorado. That means I won more events than anyone else competing at that level." Aside from school, work, horseback horse-back riding, and jogging, she also is involved in the community. About her volunteer work she only wanted to say, "I'm involved in community services for the needy." Wieser also finds time to write for the newspaper. She said, "I'm an intern at the Park Record. I've learned a lot and I've really enjoyed it." But she has her sights set on something more. She continued, "I want to work for National Geographic." The high school's newspaper, the Prospector, also benefits from Wieser's efforts. She said, "I'm the copy editor for the Prospector. I have a column and in that column I've tried to tell people what I've learned about in my high school experience. Maybe freshman can read it and gain something from it. In my last article I wrote about cliques and how unimportant they are." She added. "You should focus on being your own person and not worry about what everyone else thinks." Wieser, who has a 3.6 GPA and scored a 1,250 on the SAT, has taken AP Language and Literature courses cours-es and plans on attending the University of Utah. She said, "I want to be a communications major because I want to write." About being named a Sterling Scholar she said. "It's very important for me to be an English Sterling Scholar because the power of the written word is much more important impor-tant than the spoken word because it lasts."
