Birch, a freshman who won the 3A state title in first singles, is shown above. Plan your weekend every Thursday by reading Arts & Leisure in The Park Record Babe Ruth baseball gets started by DAVID WALTERS Record guest writer On Monday, the Park City Recreation Department opened the 1994 Babe Ruth Baseball Program. Earlier this month, the girls' Bonnet Ball Softball team began play in Salt Lake City. The Rec Department has 550 boys and girls ranging in age from six to 15 years old participating this season, in categories from tee ball to senior division. This is the first year of senior division (ages 13-15) Babe Ruth ball in Park City. The seasons will run until July and following the regular season, all-star teams will be picked from the older divisions to play in district Babe Ruth tournaments. The senior division boys started their season with two games at Treasure Mountain Middle School on Monday, May 23. In the first game, the Giants' pitching silenced the Athletics' bats and led the way to a 12-3 victory. The highlight of the game was Giants pitcher Jason Zawadzki's three innings of no-hit ball. In the second game, the Miners, with solid hitting throughout their lineup and good defensive play, came out on top of the Reds, 15-4. Although the Reds came up short, they can boast the first home run of the season as Nick Evans blasted a 330-foot shot over the fence in left-center. All coaches agreed that the games were played well physically with mental errors to be overcome with experience. mutHiie MeI13ime... ? by Luke Smith Money still doesn't equal class I'm actually kinda torn right now. On the one hand, I'm glad the Jazz beat the Denver Nuggets. In the process, they may have saved my meager apartment from destruction at the hands of irate die-hard fans of the team. On the other hand, it's kinda hard to root for a team whose owner behaves the way Larry Miller did last week. Right off the bat, we have to concede that yes, Miller does own the team and can do with it whatever he wants. But don't you think his performance of Tuesday, May 17 once again verified the axiom (last brought up in the Park Record by Mike Eberlein'in response to one Mark DeWald) that money does not equal class. While he may be in a partnership with Karl Malone in a car dealership in New Mexico, I hardly think that Malone would tell Miller how to sell cars. Miller should leave basketball to those who know just a little bit more than he does; like Malone and coach Jerry Sloan, for instance. . , Yes, Miller did apologize for his outburst, but he qualified his remarks by saying, "I would find it interesting for Karl to be judgmental about one who shot his mouthoff." Does the phrase, "Biting the hand that feeds you" mean anything to Miller? Malone, to his credit, obviously didn't let the situation affect his play in the series finale on Sunday. But he has stated that he has "some decisions to make after the season." The recent problems are just another in a string of affairs that have to make you wonder whether, NBA title or not, Malone may be gone next season. Remember back when Malone was saying he wanted out if the Jazz weren't going to commit to getting the players needed to be serious contenders? How much more until the camel's back finally breaks? As bad as this hurts Malone, the real losers are Jazz fans. His antics have affected the team that has so many Utahns in its thrall. Make no mistake about it, even without trades and firings, Miller has that power. , For instance, how does Miller's shouting make you feel if you're a young up-and-comer with the team? If that's what you've got to look forward to after years of hard work on behalf of the team and the fans, why bother? Why bust your butt for an owner who, if you're having a bad half, is going to try to run the team and sit that butt at the end of the bench? As I've stated here before, the Malone-Stockton Malone-Stockton Jazz are in the midst their last shot at a title. And the heart of that team, a duo that should be enshrined in the Hall pf Fame together, deserves a better chance than the owner of the very team they play for is giving them.
