The narrator, Morgaine of the Fairies (as she is called, and only sometimes as an honor), is the half-sister of Arthur and child of Igraine and Gorlois. Arthur, on the other hand, is the son of Uther Pendragon sent to be fostered in the court of Hector, or (in the Roman fashion) Ectorius. The story revolves around Morgaine's schooling as a priestess of Avalon and of the Goddess, as well as the subsequent political maneuvering between Christianity and paganismGoddess-worship. At Uther Pendragon's death, Arthur is propelled to the throne, but not before he is swom to defend the Goddess and Avalon. (This is consummated in a king-making ritual which involves Morgaine and results in the birth of Mordred.) Indeed, much of this book is not for the faint of heart. Magic is presented both as a great evil and a great good, and oftentimes both at once. For instance, in one scene Morgaine foresees that Lancelet will return to Camelot with his son, Galahad. He does, but unknown to both at the time, he returns with his son's dead body. Reading it was a little like reading or watching Romeo & Juliet: You know the story, but still hope beyond reason that This Time Things Will Be Different As I poured over the pages, watching the love between Lancelet and Gwenhwyfar, the quest for the holy chalice, the birth of Mordred and his subsequent estrangement from Morgaine, I saw the narrative threads weaving together to complete the final tapestry: He lay there, hair matted with blood, my Gwydion Arthur, my lover, my son...and at his feet Gwydion Mordred lay dead, my son, the child I had never known...the King Stag had killed Maverick: first fun flick continued on B3 story. Take it in your hand. Take it, and fling it from you, into the waters of the Lake." But rather than being a simple retelling of the legend, Bradley makes the motivation of her characters real (except perhaps for Gwenhwyfar, whose motivation I may never understand). She fills in lost spaces of time: What did happen during the years Mordred was growing up in Morgause's court in Lothian in order to play his part in his father's fate? segment up with a gallery of ; r , familiar faces Country-Western" J stars, old '60s Western actors. By the time the book came to a close (all 876 pages of it) I genuinely grieved for Morgaine, in whose hands the work of the Goddess was (sometimes unwittingly) wrought.
