To say "thank you" to its subscribers, the Utah Symphony is offering three special concerts Advance tickets to these performances are available only to subscribers of the classical, entertainment, chamber andor cinema series. The event of the season will takej place on Monday, Feb. 27, 1995. Cellist Yo-Yo Ma will appear for one night only to perform both the Haydn Cello Concerto and the Dvorak Cello Concerto. Being in the audience for this performance will be a once-in-a-lifetime experience. England's phenomenally successful six-man vocal ensemble, The King's Singers bring the joyful sounds of Christmas to artists, McFerrin provides a captivating performance without supporting instruments, or in many cases, lyrics. For this performance he will also serve as the orchestra's guest conductor. The Symphony's regular 18-concert 18-concert classical series has a , potpourri of guest artists and guest conductors, as well as some concerts featuring the talents of symphony musicians and the symphony itself. A favorite of Utahns and classical music lovers around the world, violinist Elmar Oliveira will brighten the symphony's season with a performance of Mendelssohn's Violin Concerto. A newer face in the classical music world is violinist Joshua Bell. After a successful debut with the Utah Symphony last season, this youthful virtuoso will return to Abravanel Hall to perform Beethoven'sVjoi'fl Concerto. Superstar pianist Misha Dichter will join the orchestra in December Abravanel Hall, Wednesday, Dec. 21. 4fter a quarter century, their devoted following is ever-growing due to the group's imaginative programming, remarkable musicianship and flawless delivery. On Saturday, Jan. 28, 1995, Bobby McFerrin will join the Utah Symphony in a gala benefit performance. One of the music world's most widely talented for performances of Mozart's Piano Concerto No. 21, "Elvira Madigan," a favorite with Utah audiences. Another Utah favorite is pianist Garrick Ohlsson, who has performed on numerous occasions with the orchestra to rave reviews. This season he will present Brahms' Piano Concerto No. 2. Symphony News pianists Hae Jung Kim, Avner Hanani, Susan Duhlmeier, Bonnie Gritton and the gold medalist of the 1994 Gina Bachauer Competition who will be selected this summer. In addition, four other string players will join the orchestra. Cellist Alison Eldredge will perform the Elgar Cello Concerto. Isabelle Faust will solo in the Paganini Violin Concerto No. 1. Prokofiev's Violin Conderto No. 1 will be performed by Kyoko Takewaza. Tomohiro Okumura performs Glazunov's Violin Concerto. Several guest conductors will mount the podium on Abravanel Hall stage during the season. These will include James Paul, Matthias Juntzsch, Leif Bjaland and Eiji Oue. Representing the orchestra as a soloist on the classical series will be principal trombone player Larry Zalkind performing a new work composed by Utah composer Henry Wolking. In addition, principal trumpet player Nick Norton will perform the world premiere of L Plog's trumpet Concerto. Tickets for the classical series concerts can be purchased in groups of 6, 12 or 18, as well as singly. There is also a designer's series package in which concert patrons can choose their own series of concerts. Season ticket prices range from $65 to $475. Single ticket prices for the 1994-95 classical Along with its regular season, the Utah Symphony sponsors various special events and appearances by some of the world's greatest performers. New Year's Eve with The Utah Symphony is increasingly becoming the place to be on New Year's Eve in Salt Lake City. Complete with a concert of beautiful classical music at 10 p.m., at midnight the party continues with dancing and food until the wee hours of the morning. On Sunday and Monday, Nov. 27 and 28, the Utah Symphony and Chorus will present its annual Messiah Sing-In. This event has become a holiday tradition for many Utah families. Patrons are invited to bring their Messiah score and sing along during the choruses. The symphony will also present a number of performances which will not feature the orchestra. Included in this list of exciting performances are trumpeter Wynton Marsalis, pianistcomedian Victor Borge, The Peking Acrobats and Le Ballet National du Senegal. Opening the 1994-95, ....... s .entertainment series will be the-ew return of guest conductor Norman Leyden and guest vocalist Shira for a program entitled "The Best of the Big Bands."
