The more funds we raise, the more sight-restoring projects we can implement And the closer we will come to Lions' ultimate objective of conquering needless blindness." The Coalville Lions Club has raised $500 toward a goal of $1,500. Fund-raising activities have included collecting scrap iron, cooking for the Fishing Derby, Annual Car Show, and County Fair. Additional fund-raising includes plans for this year are the same as last year, plus collecting used eyeglasses to be used in undeveloped countries. "I am very proud of the way club members and the community have responded to the plight of people who are threatened by blindness," said Kresser. "It is so rewarding to know that we in Coalville are playing a significant part in the greatest sight conservation initiative in history. I particularly want to thank Lion Randy Taylor from the Kamas Valley Lions Club for sharing this Campaign SightFirst with our club." Already, Lions have carried out more than 2.5 million vision screenings, provided over 358,000 free cataract surgeries to needy people, trained 1,100 eye health professionals, and built 30 new eye hospitals. Project costs are kept to a minimum, thanks to the contributed services of 1.4 million Lions worldwide. The World Health Organization (WHO), with whom Lions work closely in planning SightFirst projects, estimates that there ate over 40 million blind people today, 80 percent of whom could have had their blindness prevented or still could have it reversed. WHO'S prediction that the number of blind would double within a generation unless dramatic action were taken prompted Lions to act Sight conservation and work with the blind are firmly established traditions for Lions, dating back to 1925 when Helen Keller personally challenged Lions to become "knights of the blind in the crusade against darkness." Sinqe then Lions helped establish the white cane as a symbol of independence in the 1930s, established the first dog-guide school in the United States as well as the first corneal eyebank. Today, eyebanks sponsored by Lions account for nearly 25,000 cornea transplants per year. In the United States, one of 36 countries in which SightFirst grants have been awarded, .a nationwide project is currently in its pilot phase. Conducted in partnership with the National Eye Institute of Bethesda, Maryland, a National Eye Health Education Program is being developed to call attention to the dangers of glaucoma and diabetic retinopathy, the leading causes of blindness in North America. Don't become holiday traffic statistic Four Utahns may die in traffic accidents this Memorial Day weekend, according to the Utah Safety Council. Over the past five years, 22 people have died during this holiday period. The holiday officially begins at 6 p.m. Friday, May 27, and ends at 11:59 p.m. on Monday, May 30. Excessive speed is the number one factor associated with traffic deaths. The Safety Council offers motorists the following safe driving tips: Allow plenty of travel time, and do not speed, even if you are behind schedule. Do not drink and drive. If you plan on drinking alcoholic beverages, designate a driver who will not be drinking to get you home. Wear your safety belt, and fasten children into approved child safety seats. Have your vehicle inspected and tuned before long trips. Keep a safe following distance- use the "two-second" rule. During bad weather, slaw down, turn on your headlights arid increase your following distance. To fight fatigue on long trips, stop every 90 minutes to rest, eat light meals, exercise and rotate drivers. If you travel alone and feel sleepy, stop and get rest. The Utah Safety Council encourages everyone to have a safe holiday. If you would like additional information, call 262-5400.
