Sewell has spent the past few weeks sorting the records into a variety of categories including classical, rock, jazz, folk, and many others. After sorting through the tons of records, Sewell is convinced that music lovers and collectors alike are in for some incredible finds at the sale, including many rare and out-of-print records. About 60 percent of the vinyl falls into the classical category, from serious pieces to silly recordings like "Dinner Music," which claims, "delicious food and gay music are inseparable companions of good living." And there are plenty of curiosities, too, like "The de Gaulle great military officer, writer, and statesman. De Gaulle and France moves chronologically through de Gaulle's life, looking at his meteoric rise to power and his years in and out of office, ending with his death in 1970. The program also explores broader themes that shed light on this period, including the possibilities and limits of democratic leadership, and the impact of postwar social change on French society. There are also some priceless covers capturing the aesthetics of their time, from a bearded gentleman wearing a bathing cap to plenty of bright orange hues from the '70s. Sewell got the idea for a vinyl sale from another public radio station in Massachusetts, which raised $20,000 from a similar event last year. She said she also liked a fund-raiser that dealt with records, since "that's what we've been about for years." subject of KUED film long learning is our bottom line." The documentary begins with de Gaulle being sentenced to death for treason. After the surrender of France to German forces in 1940, de Gaulle refused to accept the terms of armistice with Germany and rallied his countrymen to the cause of free France. Defying history and his country's laws to set up a government-in-exile in London, de Gaulle and the Free French gradually gained legitimacy and strength, culminating in the liberation of Paris in August, 1944. Yet, de Gaulle abruptly resigned from the new government For 12 years de Gaulle was out of the political arena, writing his memoirs and consolidating his philosophy and vision. "And," she laughed, "I'm sure that some of these records are not and will never be available on CD." If you're a die-hard collector hoping to get "first dibs" on the treasures by calling the radio station for a sneak peek, forget it, Sewell said. The last third of the program depicts de Gaulle's years as a "republican monarch."
