New Age artist David Arkenstone joins the orchestra for the Thanksgiving weekend on Nov. 25 and 26. Known for his imaginative use of keyboards and synthesizers, Arkenstone says his outlook on music has been influenced by composers like Sibelius, Tchaikovsky and Copland. The orchestra will present its annual holiday concerts on Dec. 16 and 17. Joining Silverstein for "Home for the Holidays." This fun-filled fun-filled evening of holiday music features local high school choirs and rousing sing-alongs as well as a visit from the "jolly old elf" himself. Just in time for St Patrick's day on March 3 and 4, The Chieftains will return to Salt Lake City to perform with the symphony. This grammy-award-winning group will perform the traditional Irish music which has made them famous. On April 7 and 8, Peter Nero will return for two entertainment series performances. Nero's extensive career as a composer, pianist, conductor and arranger has produced more than 25 albums, eight Grammy nominations and two Grammy awards. For his performances with the Utah Symphony, he will present a variety of music ranging from favorite standards to contemporary Broadway hits to rock and roll classics. The series will close with a performance entitled "Bravo Broadway!" Join the orchestra for an evening of favorite Broadway songs and some of today's brightest Broadway stars. Kam Cheng (who played the title role in the original Broadway cast of Miss Saigon), Craig Schulman (Jean Valjean in the Broadway cast of Les Miserables) and Keith Buterbaugh (Phantom and Raoul in the Broadway production of Phantom of the Opera) will join forces to present songs by Cole Porter, Jerome Kern, Leonard Bernstein, Rodgers and Hammerstein and' '-Andrew '-Andrew Lloyd Webber. The Utah Symphony continues its successful cinema series by expanding all three concerts to two nights each. Each film will be presented on Friday and Saturday evenings. The series opens on Oct 7 and 8 with The General. This Buster Keaton classic features the star and director as a railroad engineer and Confederate sympathizer trying to recover his stolen locomotive from Yankee soldiers. Audiences will laugh out loud at Keaton's antics in this action-packed comedy, filmed aboard a speeding train. The second program in the series is Peter Pan. Audiences will fly along with Wendy, Michael, Peter and Tinkerbell through this silent film version of the classic tale. The final program on May 19 and 20 will be The Last Command. Art imitates life in this classic 1928 drama. A Russian general forced to flee during the Soviet Revolution, finds himself working as a film extra in Hollywood, where he is cast to play a Russian army general during the revolution. Tickets for the cinema series are $38 to $58 for the entire season and $14 to $22 for single events. The popular family series, initiated during the 1991-92 season, is returning with a few fun changes. For the upcoming season, the series will include four concerts: The annual "Halloween Madness" concert on Monday, Oct. 31, complete with classical music with Halloween themes and a costume contest; the "Salute to Youth" concert on Tuesday, Nov. 22, featuring young soloists from around Utah; on Monday, Feb. 6, the orchestra sponsors a program entitled "The Virtuoso" featuring Silverstein performing Brahms' Violin Concerto; and a unique performance debut On Monday, March 13, virtuoso harmonica 1 player Robert Bonfiglio will join iilM the symphony for an unforgettable evening. Ticket prices for the family series are $90 for the entire immediate family and tickets are sure to go fast again this year. This season's youth series will continue the traditions of past years with great classical music for children and families. The themes include "The Listener" on Nov. 26, with the Magic Circle Mime Company, the popular family Christmas tradition "Here Comes Santa Claus" on Dec. 17, "Musical Roots, A Folk Music Spectacular" on March 4, and Peter and the Wolf on April 8. The popular "instrument petting zoo" will be back along with other fun lobby activities to introduce kids to classical music. Season tickets are $14 for children and $22 for adults. A season family pass for the immediate family is $65. The chamber series will feature music by some of history's greatest composers performed by a diverse group of talented musicians. The series opens Thursday, Sept 22 with a salute to the genius of Bach. Silverstein will conduct and play the violin on this program which will also feature the virtuoso I! !! Live ' Music Dancing!
