Filled with romantic tragedy, whimsical , delight and classical favorites, the season consists of three full-length ballets, a diverse renprtory program and the traditional holiday production of The Nutcracker. "Ballet West's stature as one of the country's foremost performing arts organizations continues to grow," states Ballet West artistic " director, John Hart. "Within the last year, we have received accolades from many of the nation's leading dance critics for Five Guys Named Moe Five Guys Named Moe, the hit Broadway musical prtJducedby . Cameron Mackintosh (Les Miserables, The Phantom of the Opera, and Miss Saigon), will premiere at the Capitol Theatre Tuesday, June 14 through Sunday, , June 19 as the final show of the Theatre League of Utah 1993-94 Season. . Winner of London's prestigious Olivier Awards (Outstanding Entertainment of the Year and Best Choreographer-Charles Augins), Clark Peters' Five Guys Named Moe is directed and choreographed by Charles Augins with vocal arrangements by Chapman Roberts. Five Guys Named Moe, the song and dance celebration featuring music of 1940's Jazz-great Louis Jordan, opened on Broadway at the Eugene O'Neill Theatre in April 1992, winning the 1992 Tony Award nomination for Best Musical. Time magazine proclaims the show "An absolutely joyful experience. A rollicking good time." The season begins with Swan Lake, which will be performed from Sept. 16-24. Producer Cameron Mackintosh was instrumental in transferring the original production of Five Guys Named Moe from London's Theatre Royal Stratford East to the West End's Lyric Theatre, where it continues to play to packed housed since its opening in December 1990. In addition to this national tour, future productions will open in Boston and Melbourne, Australia. Ballet West will present the world premiere of Queen of Spades, beginning Oct. 28 and running through Nov. 5. Choreographed by Andre Prokovsky after the opera of the same name, this full-length ballet is filled with complex romances, tragedy and the magic of the cards. Ballet West officially begins the holiday season on Dec. 9 with the opening of its most popular production, The Nutcracker. Performances will take place through Dec. 31. Ballet West's Nutcracker, choreographed by WuTam Christensen to Tchaikovsky's beloved score is complemented by the enchanting set and costumes by Ariel Ballif. Travel with Alice to the mystical home'of the White Rabbit, Mad Hatter and Queen of Hearts, when Ballet West presents the Utah premiere of Ben Stevenson's Alice in Wonderland, Feb. 10-18. Using Sir John Tenniel's drawings fronyhe original printed edition of the book as an inspiration, Nadine Baylis has created over 100 vibrant and exotic costumes which vividly bring to life the peculiar and sometimes grotesque world in which Alice's adventures take place. Written specifically for dance, the music by Joseph Horovitz is "charming, lyrical and full of ballet possibilities." Ballet West's Spring Repertory Program will be presented April 14-22, 14-22, and will consist of three productions: Seasons, Bonjour Brel, and Carmina Burana. Described as "sumptuous" and "a triumph" when first performed in 1992, Kurt Bestor lovers again join ballet lovers for the return of Seasons, choreographed by Raymond Van Mason to Bestor's music of the same name. This sometimes lyrical, sometimes jazzy ballet captures all the emotional grace associated with the chahgesof nature's seasons. Ballet West is excited to present the premiere of Bonjour Brel. Choreographed by Eddy Toussaint, this one-act ballet is set to the French music and songs of Jacques Brel and relates the emotional roller coaster of two lovers in a park. Carmina Burana' s theatrical intensity makes it one of dance's most memorable works. Choreographed and designed by John Butler, an early protege of Martha Graham, the work is now in the repertoire of many celebrated ballet and modern dance companies. In 1995, we celebrate the 100th birthday of Carl Orff who wrote the powerful score for orchestra, chorus and vocal solo for Carmina Burana.
