Andy Garcia and Meg Ryan star in When A Man Loves A Woman, a story about lovei and alcoholism. Man Loves A Woman offers touching story without sap by MICHELLE JAMES Record guest writer When A Man Loves A Woman Starring Andy Garcia, Meg Ryan Directed by Luis Mandoki Touchstone Pictures 1994 This week I decided to review a new theater release instead of my usual off-beat video picks. I was, however, surprised that this movie was very different from what the sneak previews would have you believe. When A Man Loves A Woman (R) is the story of Michael and Alice Green and what happens when two people who care deeply for one another just can't seem to communicate. Alice (Meg Ryan) is a loving wife and mother who seems to have the perfect life, except for one thing . . . she's an alcoholic. Stein Eriksen kicks off BeerFest '94 The excitement is building as Stein Eriksen Lodge prepares to host its first ever beer festival. BeerFest '94 kicks off Saturday, May 28, at 1 1 a.m. until S p.m. on the lodge's scenic outer decks. Admission is free. The festival will highlight more than a dozen prize brews from at least four Utah microbreweries. Festivities include beer-making demonstrations throughout the day, live music by Chord-On Blues beginning at noon and a Bjorn Stova fashion show at 2 p.m. The award-winning Glitretind Restaurant will prepare spicy southwestern, barbecue and Oriental fare for the occasion. For more information, call 649-3700. Cinema Review ir Her loving husband Michael (Andy Garcia) would do anything for his wife, but Alice has kept her drinking problem hidden from him as well. As the movie begins, life in the Green household is going smoothly as Alice and Michael share loving moments with their two young daughters. But when they take a romantic trip to Mexico and Alice nearly drowns in a drunken stupor, Michael is made painfully aware that there's something drastically wrong with his wife. This movie is the documentation of Alice's rehabilitation process and Michael's adaptation from airline pilot freedom to full-time father. It documents the realization that Michael was truly unaware of what was taking place in his own home ' and the grief that overtakes him as " he realizes that he should have noticed his wife's problem. ' "ciq All works out for the best in thtf'ifi;ni end, which I realize could mean a ' happy or sad ending; that's why I tfcti worded it that way. Far be it from :jm me to give away the ending of a l0j uq movie that is deeply touching that many people can relate to on - -1 several different levels. I will go so far as to say that I j felt more sorry for Michael j through the entire ordeal than I did for Alice. But the most sorrow and pity was extended to their two j children, as always in these J situations. i I enjoyed this movie because it ! was reality that was made more I enjoyable with little bits of I laughter that helped bnng the point home yet didn't hit you over the ' head with a heavy message.
