Tears of joy. ; Sitting in her house on Daly Avenue, one notices the figurines land the glass bottles, the rocks from . various mines in and around Park City and the pictures. Pictures of her 12 children and their families. "These all mean something to me," she said. The bottles and glass cars tell of a miner's daughter and a miner's sister and a miner's wife. There are also plaques and awards. One letter reads "Congratulations - to you on your anniversary .." sincerely Ron and Nancy Reagan. '. Governor Norm Bangerter also : wrote to convey his congratulations to the couple on their golden anniversary. The 1984 Valley Forge Honor Certificate honored Bemeil Carter Kummer with an Individual . Achievement Award. There are more. Bea moved to Park City with her Seven brothers and sisters when she was six years old. According to Bea her first memories of Park City are ' fighting with all the other kids. "I had to lick 'em all to stay here," and so she did even the boys. "It took ; me a couple of years before I made any good friends. The girls down the hill told me they didn't want me in (heir clubhouse and so I had to lick tfiem too. Later we became friends, Of course, but it was hard at first" She also remembers going with her grandfather to Helper to pick up truckloads of coal "We used to deliver it to Coalville or anywhere people needed it." Bea left High School in 1939 to have her first daughter, Kathryn. She ; would give birth to 1 1 daughters and one son with her husband Kenneth, who spent 43 years as a miner in die Park City mines. It was just last week that Bea turned over the historian's scrapbook 'When I first moved to Park City life was quite a bit simpler. The town has changed a lot, but I don't yell about it any more. I'm getting used to it. I just hope the town continues to get better' -Parkite Bea Kummer to the Women's Athenaeum because of her failing health, but she is still consulted regularly by the Athenaeum and the Daughters of the Utah Pioneers. She has been historian for the town and the county. According to Bea, she still gets two or three visitors a week at her home who have historical questions for her. Perhaps Bea is best known as a tour guide around the town. She would often be seen leading a group of tourists or newcomers up Main Street pointing out the local attractions and telling the stories that went along with the mining town. "Sometimes we would have as many as 65 people on tour," she said. So it was ojily natural that the town -i historian should write a book.'"'' She also wrote the book Walking Through Historic Park City. She also wrote a weekly column entitled "Chit-Chat by Bea" and covered the 4-H club for the Park Record . "I remember the first time we the 4-H club went to clean the cemetery in 1959, we cleaned up 10 carloads worth of bottles and stuff." She also taught the 4-H club how to cook and sew and about the types of rock that were being pulled out of the local mines. In 1955 Bea moved into her present house. She has rented the upstairs since then and has had many tenants. "I guess they are all my favorite," she said, "even the man' J. " with the Boa Constrictor." She currently shares her home with her cat Boots who chases all the dogs away. Bea is planning to move to Salt Lake to live with her youngest daughter toward the end of the summer. As she will be leaving Park City soon, the City Council has proclaimed May 30, 1994 as Bea Kummer Day.
