Show iisuaip The Park Record D Section B For the week of February 3-9 B1 D Thursday, February 3, 1994 Digging up the roots on the old family tree by AMBER McKEE Record staff writer In the past couple of thousand years just a few billion people have lived on the earth. A drop in the pan, really, in comparison with the longevity of the various dinosaurs who once tramped across global landforms. In fact, there are probably sea turtles who are older than humanity Still whether you are a believer in Adam and Eve, UFOs or otherwise, there are advantages to knowing where you came from. Due to the efforts of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Park City (along with the rest of the world) has access to the foremost genealogical library in this world. : The Family History Center, as it is called, is located across from Temple Square in Salt Lake City at 35 N. West Temple. From 7:30 am. to 6 p.m on Mondays and until 10 pm ; on Tuesdays through Saturdays, you can use their facilities for free to dig up the roots on the old family tree. The library offers the largest collection of books devoted solely to the records of people and places available, with 250,000 titles. According to Elder Hardy the LDS Family History missionary who gave a brief orientation on how to use the library the collection might be small in relation to the number of volumes, but is "respectable" because of its subject focus. In addition to the Family History Center in Salt Lake, there are around 2,000 satellite Family History Centers located around the world, which offer longdistance long-distance access to the main library (For instance, there is A a center f I am the family face; Flesh perishes, I live on. Thomas Hardy Heredity located at 160 W Main Street in Midway Call 654-2760 654-2760 for more information.) . These centers are only able to offer access to approximately 80 percent of the information available in Salt Lake, because the center does not allow its books to circulate. However, progress is made continually as the center continues to microfilm, microfiche and computerize its information. So just what can you access? Well, if you happen to have LDS relatives who have been doing their temple work, you can access a lot pretty easily by simply using Ancestral File on their computer main frame. Using my great grandfather on my mother's side, John Fredrick Peterson, who was born in 1878 in Coalville, I was able to trace back to the middle of the 17th century m England and Scandinavia (Much of that research had been compiled by my grandfather's brother and his family). My Grandmother McKee, on the other hand, has already traced her family back to a man named cents per page (each page can hold up to six generations). In addition to a hard copy of the information, you can also save it to a disk on an ASCII file, thereby allowing you to keep a copy on your genealogy (je' ne aT e je, -al'-) n., pi. -gies Gr. genea, race foga, -LOGY 1. a recorded history of one's ancestry 2. the study of family descent 3. descent from an ancestor; lineage ge' nealog' Ucal adj. ge' neal' ogist n. Accessing family history which has already been discovered is easy The main frame of the computer will print your pedigree at the low, low price of five computer at home. The hard part is connecting the dots where the research hasn't been done.
