Show The Park Record Section B Thursday, February 3, 1994 H Page B13 A little drama, a little comedy-- middle ages style by MICHELLE JAMES Record guest writer The King's Mistress Starring Timothy Dalton, Valeria Golino and Robin Renucci Vidmark Entertainment 1992 Since the film festival is over I should have had plenty of time this weekend to watch movies, right? Wrong. After lounging around all day Saturday and allowing the Superbowl to consume Sunday evening, my biggest accomplishment this weekend was the laundry. Jeanne soon becomes the king's property when even her husband gives in to the king's desires. And so begins a lovehate relationship to rival any soap opera couple. As the movie progresses, the king falls deeper and deeper in love with Jeanne as she grows more adamant about never loving him; which is his greatest desire. Her demands as retribution for the services she unwillingly must render are revenge upon the people who contributed to her "imprisonment" (namely her husband's family) and fine artifacts and jewelry. Video Review j So, I found myself frantically searching Park City Home Video for some post-football entertainment. I was in a rather odd mood and couldn't decide whether a comedy or suspense thriller would suit me. What I ended up with was neither. The King's Mistress (R) is a tale of obsession, lust and power set in the 17th Century. Victorio, The King of Piedmont (Timothy Dalton) falls in love with Jeanne (Valeria Golino) at first sight. Jeanne, the wife of Alesandro (Robin Renucci), the king's Lord Chamberlain, is madly in love with her husband and is disturbed by the king's constant advances and innuendoes. Jeanne is asked by the church to be the king's mistress when his malaise deepens. She refuses, of course, being so much in love with Alesandro, but what the king can't have willingly, he takes. So, The king eagerly concedes to Jeanne's wishes in hopes of winning her love, and despite her repulsion for what she's become Jeanne and the king begin to develop a special relationship. Piedmont goes through a war with France (Jeanne's homeland) and the turmoil, combined with a misfortune befalling Jeanne, seems to unite these two lovers. In the end, fate prevails and things turn out as they must. I wouldn't dare give away the end, but if you're a romantic like myself, you'll need a handful of tissues. I admit, this isn't by any means a normal love relationship, but it has its moments; and what moments they are. My roommate thought I was crazy to cry at the end, but I love these types of movies and the king really did love Jeanne, in his own strange way; as she did him in Jazz greats featured on KUER s- - m& -vrJ v? But you'll have to judge for yourself whether or not it's worth crying over. You may remember Timothy Dalton as James Bond in License To Kill or in The Rocketeer, and Valeria Golino from Rain Man and Hot Shots. In this film they seem perfectly matched and present an interesting couple to watch. Robin Hood: Men In Tights Starring Cary Elwes, Richard Lewis, Roger Rees and Amy Yasbeck 20th Century Fox 1993 After drying my eyes and clearing my nose, I definitely needed something to make me laugh. So, Monday night I braved the freezing temperatures and brought home something I was positive would make me laugh; I was right. Robin Hood: Men In Tights (PG-13) (PG-13) is the same spoof on Robin Hood: Prince Of Thieves as Hot Shots was on Top Gun. I ended up crying all over again, only this time from laughing so hard. You have to rent this one to believe it. It's basically the same story as the Kevin Costner version, but every place a comical twist could be there was one. From a wandering mole on Prince John's (Richard Lewis) face, to a band of Merry Men that sing of their masculinity while prancing around in cute little green tights. Robin Hood (Cary Elwes) is, of course, on a quest to help the poor and less fortunate while trying to get his hands on the Maid Marian (Amy Yasbeck). As always, the Sheriff of Rottingham (Roger Rees, formerly Robin Colcourt of Cheers fame)--and yes, it's Rottingham in this version-is desperately trying to foil Robin's plans Mel Brooks is both the director and producer of this film and he also plays Rabbi Tuckman, the Jewish Friar Tuck of Sherwood Forest (I know, but I didn't make it up). Crazy things are present throughout the movie and some are so subtle you have to watch for them. There are guest appearances by Tracey Ullman as Latrine, the haggard old witch who lusts after the Sheriff of Rottingham, Dom Deluise as Don Giovanni, a Godfatheresque hitman the Sheriff hires to get rid of Robin Hood, Dick Van Patton as the priest and Patrick Stewart (Captain Piccard of Star Trek, The Next Generation, for all you Trekies) as King Richard the Lionheart. Trust me, you have to be in a silly mood to watch this film and enjoy it. Nothing is taken seriously and everything is up for humorous restructuring when it comes to a Mel Brooks remake. But you will laugh, at least a little, and spend a couple of hours enjoying the lighter side of life; which isn't always easy to do.
