Show Page A1 0 B Thursday, February 3, 1994 The Park Record D Section A Utah AARP Legislative Committee sets goals Once again, the State Legislative Committee (SLC) of the American Association of Retired Persons (AARP) has announced the enactment of a comprehensive health and long term care plan for all Utahns as their number one priority during the 1994 legislative session. The chair of the Utah SLC, University to host gun control debate The 10th Annual Jefferson B. Fordham Debate will be held on Thursday, Feb. 17, at 6:30 p.m. at the University of Utah Fine Arts Auditorium. Paul G. Cassell, Associate Professor of Law at the University of Utah College of Law will serve as moderator for this year's debate entitled "Gun Control: Should We? Can We?" Panelists will include: Richard M. Aborn, president, Handgun Control, Inc.; Marv Gallcnson, Gallenson's Sporting Goods; Don B. Kates, Jr., criminologist and Second Amendment historian; David B. Kopel, research director, Independence Institute; Ruben Ortega, Salt Lake City chief of police; and Andrew A. Valdez, juvenile court judge. Out of control medical costs and the increasing vulnerability of our citizens has intensified our commitment to health care reform in the past few years. Controlling costs especial ly in prescription drugs, is a tremendous worry for older Americans' everywhere. We'll continue to lob by for health care reform on both a state and federal level." Other priori! ty items for the legislative gro up will include supporting appropriations for Utah State Human Services Department's Division of Aging and Adult Services; and strengthening the punishment of persons convicted of crimes and abuse against the elderly. The State Legislative Committee (SLC) is a volunteer group that testifies before legislative committees, tracks legislation which concerns older Americans, and researches pertinent issues. More than 149,435 Utahns belong to the American Association of Retired Persons (AARP). The Utah State Legislative Committee, which is composed of volunteers from the AARP membership across the state, works on behalf of not only AARP members, but all older persons. Other AARP programs in Utah include free tax counseling for low and moderate income seniors, older driver improvement courses, and both employment and retirement planning courses for midlife and older workers. Ken Creer of Springville, is state director. Photo contest to aid Arthritis Foundation Payless Drug Stores has announced a major contest to help generate funding for the Arthritis Foundation. The contest, titled "Kids are For Loving," focuses on children and family life. The contest appeals to parents and grandparents by encouraging them to enter photos of their children and grandchildren having fun with the family, with their pets, participating in an activity or sport, or on vacation. They will be asked to pay a $1 donation to the Arthritis Foundation to enter the contest, which will run through March 15. A national winner, selected from among local store winners, will earn a 4-day, 3-night trip to Universal Studios in Orlando, with transportation provided by United Airlines.
