Show The Park Record D Section A Thursday, February 3, 1 994 Page A9 N. N, N. V. Si s Si s. " V Students show off work at technology fair by DICK GRIFFIN Record Staff Writer David Ure wasn't the only representative from Summit County at the capital on Wednesday, Jan. 26. Parleys Park Elementary School teacher Debby Walter took her third and fourth grade students to the Utah State Students Fair to demonstrate their work in history, math and writing. Using the HyperCard software program, students presented class projects on the history of Yellowstone National Park and Utah Peoples. The projects required making an outline, programming background menus and creating visual aids. Maps of each tribe show location and direction of migration to the Utah area. Sandy Margulies, a fourth grader, said "We do lots of stuff on the computer: Utah People reports, subtraction, addition, multiplication, division and now we're rounding off to the nearest 10." There are six computers in the classroom and that helps students learn to cooperate. Walter said, "It's better for two or three students to share a computer. Cooperative learning teaches them how to work together Blinding disease impacts millions New figures reveal more than 13 million Americans age 40 and older show signs of the blinding eye disease, age-related macular degeneration, according to Prevent Blindness Utah, an affiliate of Prevent Blindness America. Figures show AMD is becoming the number one cause of blindness in the U.S. "The figures are significant because it is only recently that Prevent Blindness has been able to document how many people in each state have AMD," said Colleen Malouf, executive director, Prevent Blindness Utah. "We are particularly concerned that during the next 20 years, the number of AMD victims will drastically increase because high-risk baby boomers will have signs of the disease," predicted Malouf. There are approximately 76 million baby boomers born between 1946 and 1961. Age-related macular degeneration, is an eye disease that affects a small, but crucial, area of the eye called the macula. While signs of AMD may begin to appear among individuals over age 40, the disease most often strikes people 60 years and older. People who have a family history of AMD are at a higher risk of developing the eye disease later in life. There are two majof forms of AMD: wet and dry. m "wet" AMD, tiny blood vessels grow, break, and then leak blood and fluid into the eye. In certain cases, people with "wet" AMD can benefit from laser treatment. "But the treatment is only effective if the disorder is detected early," warned Malouf. " "Dry" AMD is the more common form of the disease. Unlike the wet form, there is currently no effective treatment to halt the progression of AMD. USU planning study tour to Russia; Central Asia An 18-day travel-study program to Russia, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan and Kazakhstan is being offered by the Department of Languages and Philosophy at Utah State University, June 6-23. The program will be directed by Dr. Kent Robson and Dr. Lynn Eliason, both of whom have extensive knowledge of the country and the language. Visits to areas in the former Soviet Union have been conducted by the department and the university since 1975. Total cost of the study tour will be $3,490, which includes round-trip round-trip transportation from Salt Lake City, first-class hotels, three meals daily, porterage, excursions and theater performances. Participants in the 1994 program will enter four of the 15 former Soviet republics, including Russia In Moscow, the group will visit the Kremlin, Red Square and other significant points of interest that have made this city an important historical and political center. A highlight of the travel experience will be visits to remote and once inaccessible areas in Central Asia. The ancient city of Samarkand, once the cultural and economic mecca of Asia located on the silk road, is still known for its beauty. Time has stood still in this Islamic center, creating the impression of a great outdoor museum. From here, the participants will have a good opportunity to view the region's varied landscapes: everything from low-lying deserts to high mountains. Ancestral cities and rural lifestyles along the route reflect centuries of history and-tradition. and-tradition. Mountainous terrain surrounding Bishkek (formerly Frunze) and Almaty (formerly Alma-Ata) extends south to the world's loftiest peaks. The journey's next leg will be by air to St. Petersburg, "Venice of the North." Formerly Leningrad, this is one of Europe's most beautiful cities and is famous for its splendid architecture. In this metropolis which was built by Peter the Great, the participants will visit winter and summer palaces and perhaps the most spectacular art museum in the world: the Hermitage. An additional two-day stop is planned for Helsinki, Finland and environs. Enrollment in the travel program is limited to 40 participants. University credit in Russian language and culture is available. Orientation sessions will be conducted in advance of the trip. Those desiring further information may contact Kent Robson at 750-1214, 750-1214, or Lynn Eliason' at 750-1219, 750-1219, or write to the Department of Languages and Philosophy at USU in Logan, 84322-0720.
