Interestingly enough, both films were shot in black and white. The Waldo Salt Scrcenwriting Award, named in honor of the longtime advisor at Sundance Filmmakers and Screenwriters Labs, is given annually by the dramatic jury to a film exemplifying outstanding writing. This year's winner was Tom Noonan's What Happened Was. The award is sponsored by United Talent Agency. The Freedom of Expression Award, sponsored by The Playboy Foundation, is bestowed on a documentary which informs and educates the public on an issue of social concern. The award, voted by the documentary jury, was given to two films this year: Allie Light's Dialogues with Madwomen and Gini Reticker's and Amber Hollibaugh's Heart of the Matter. Heart of the Matter investigates the inroads that AIDS has made among a community all too often ignored by the media: women. The film focuses particularly on Janice Jirau, but uses the stories of a number of others to illustrate the appalling fact that AIDS has become one of the top five killers of women in this country today. Dialogues with Madwomen also takes a woman's issue as its central concern as it chronicles the very personal stories of a number of people who have waged an ongoing war with emotional illness throughout their lives. These are all very creative, articulate and artistic women, who dramatically illustrate the old cliche that genius and madness are only a hair apart. About halfway through, the film takes a fascinating twist that makes it even more personal. Dialogues with Madwomen was produced by Light and Irving Saraf. In addition, the documentary jury conferred a Special Jury Award for Technical Excellence on Arthur Dong's Coming Out Under Fire. Based on the recent book by Allan Bervbe, the film documents the dilemma faced by gay men and women in the military during World War H, who had to lie in order to serve their country. Along with the special recognition accorded to Sean Nelson of Fresh, the dramatic jury also voted to acknowledge the performances of two other youthful actors, Alicia Witt and Renee Humphrey, who portray the troubled teenagers in Rafal Zielinski's Fun. Wildlife specials focus on elephants In the past ten years, one-half of Africa's elephants have been brutally slaughtered for their ivory-at ivory-at the rate of 100,000 in a single year. On Wednesday; Feb. 9, KUED-Channel 7 presents two specials that take intimate looks at the lives of these gentle giants, and their increasingly difficult struggle for survival. Starting at 7 p.m., "Reflections on Elephants" provides a look at one of the last frec-roaming herds left in Africa in an all-new National Geographic Special. Wildlife filmmakers Dereck and Beverly Joubert criss-cross the huge eanse'Dfmb'Attriarf nation of"" Botswana to show an intimate portrait of these magnificent monoliths, examining their extraordinary skills of cooperation, memory, and communication. During the journey, cameras reveal how the matriarchal society of elephants is guided by one dominant female who uses her experience and wisdom to lead daughters, nieces, and juvenile nephews through life and beyond hunger, thirst and lurking predators. The program also reveals the "language" of elephants: rumbles of low frequencies that are almost inaudible to humans. Following at 8 p.m., Nature presents "Elephants of Tsavo: Love and Betrayal," a very personal examination of the elephants' plight by former game warden Simon Trevor. In his 30 years of wildlife filmmaking, Trevor has witnessed the decimation of the elephant herds of Tsavo National Park by bandits in search of ivory, and recorded some of the most heartbreaking scenes affecting the largest land mammal on earth. "Elephants of Tsavo" features the efforts begun by the late David Sheldrake, a warden at Tsavo who spent 28 years waging war against the poachers.
