Park City's lone point was scored by Cottis, making the score Uintah 38 - Jamie Cottis 9 after three quarters. Cottis also picked up three fouls in the quarter, giving her four for the game. Playing with four fouls, Cottis took only one shot from the field in the final stanza. Other Lady Miners began to pick up the slack, starting with Amber Barker who, at 7:35 in the fourth quarter, picked up an offensive rebound and became the first Park City player other than Cottis to score. Less than a minute later, Candace Christiansen picked up an offensive rebound and passed to Ashley Burns who was fouled while shooting. Burns converted one of two free throws and then stole the ball on Uintah's next possession. She dished to Francis who drove down the lane to score two more Park City points. Christiansen rounded out the Lady Miner scoring with four minutes to play when she perfectly anticipated a Uintah pass and stole the ball. She scored on the subsequent layup. The Lady Miners traveled to Heber to face the Wasatch Wasps after press time on Wednesday night. They'll host Lehi in another Region X game Friday, Feb. 4 ODdd tflne MeDSime... by Luke Smith Save sports, turn off your television. As anyone who hasn't been living in a cave the last few weeks knows, the Super Bowl took place last Sunday. As expected, the Dallas Cowboys stomped the Buffalo Bills (or are they the Minnesota Vikings of the '70s reincarnated?). And, as expected, everyone with a television set between New York and New Guinea was tuned in. An event like the Super Bowl is often held up as the pinnacle of sports. Rather, I'd like to offer it up as the pinnacle of the principle of conspicuous consumption. The numbers bouncing around professional sports are sickening: advertising space went for $900,000 per minute, John Madden got umpteen million dollars just to talk about football on TV, and God and Phil Knight are the only two who know just how much Michael Jordan (or is it Johnny Kilroy?) actually makes. Actually, there may be one other: I wonder if Mike told Bugs Bunny just how much a "bazillion" dollars is when they made their commercial together? And it's not just professional sports. The pantheon of amateur excellence, the Olympics, is under assault as well. The whole Tonya Harding story is enough to make even the most hardened jock stand up and say, "Hey, enough is enough." The injuring of Nancy Kerrigan had nothing to do with going to the Olympics; Harding was a shoo-in for one of the two spots to go to the Games; but rather about dollars. With Kerrigan out of the way, Harding conceivably gets a shinier medal in Norway and is thus able to parlay it into the aforementioned "bazillion" dollars in advertising. So much for "faster, higher, farther;" maybe the new motto for the Olympics should be "gimme, gimme, gimme." Meanwhile on Super Sunday, some people (presumably those without televisions) were out cross country skiing, hiking, skiing at a resort, playing hockey or basketball; anything but watching the snippets of a football game between the truly entertaining segments: the commercials. They were proving that someday, when all else fails, sports will continue to be an integral part of human existence. Without the country singers and fireworks, without the cameras and lights, without the blimps; basically, without the money; sports is about doing. As Phil Knight's cliche says, "Just do it.' While to those people at Nike the phrase means money and nothing else, they are in fact words of wisdom. Instead of making to so-called "real" sports even more obscene than they already are by pumping in more and more money, get off the couch, put the chips back in the cupboard and get out and actually "do" something. Make it a movement; both of an individual out the door and money-hungry attitudes out of the sporting world.
