The pictorial histories on stone are called 'petroglyphs" when chipped or carved and "pic-tographs" "pic-tographs" when painted on the rocks. Unusual figures representing represen-ting everything from calendars to bear dances can be traced back 1,200 to 1,600 years and cover the period of approximately 300 to 850 AD. It is believed the finest specimens near Vernal are those in Dry Fork Canyon about ten miles north of town. Some others are in Nine Mile Canyon south of Myton, and at Dinosaur National Monument Monu-ment north of Jensen. The events happening in these valleys recorded by the ancient ones took place at the same time Alexander the Great was sweeping to victory over the known Eastern World or when persecuted Chris- tians dwelled in Roman catacombs. While most of the cliff murals represent chieftains, male, and female individuals, ceremonials, hunting scenes and other activities of that time, there were no words written or language significance to tell a continuous story. The trapezoid-shaped human figures with horned headress, ornamental or-namental neck pieces and. belts, often showing outstretched fingers, are typical of Fremont Indian In-dian Culture. Occasionally, figures appear to be carrying heads of other individuals, some of whom may represent masks, but those with necks and what appears to be drops of blood, are probably trophy heads. The round bodied figures are warriors wearing large shields over their chests. There have been other "valuable artifacts besides the petroglyphs found in this area such as baskets, pottery, grainaries, cave dwellings, dwell-ings, weapons and more. Many of these items are on display at the Utah Field House Museum of Natural History State Park in Vernal. Ver-nal. The sad part of having the petroglyphs and other historical treasures exposed to the public is the vandalism and theft that takes place at these sites. Careless and thoughtless individuals in-dividuals have shot at the pictures and caused damage. Others have chipped or scratched over- the et- Continued on Page 9 N D 6EBV 3) 2) HOMES Attho corner of 1500 W Hwy. AO 7A9-9390 CLERRERS T Phone: 789-3787 JJ Ulwn You Look Good,.,, You Feel Good!
