"I look forward to the Utah seminar as we all must try harder in the tourism industry to market our national treasures." The focus of the seminar will be the effect of tourism on employment and the economy of the state and nation and to explore the opportunities to promote pro-mote the state's tourism and vast natural wonders. . Hatch said Utah was a natural site for this first informal senate hearing on tourism. "Dinosaurland offers such historic and breath-taking beauties in the High Uinta's Primitive Area, the Ashley National Forest, Flaming Gorge Dam and dinosaur relics," said Hatch. "No state, and for that matter, no country on earth has so much for so many." "We have five national parks, several national monuments and recreation areas, numerous state parks and tourist sites. The weather is beautiful year round, whether you're fishing, skiing, or taking in some of our . beautiful scenic attractions." A recent survey taken at several Hatch town meetings indicated that over 50 percent of those polled will spend their vacations this year in Utah. "That's good," continued Hatch, "but since we have so much in Utah POST OFFICE BIDS The U.S. Postal Service has called for bids for construction of a new main post office in Vernal, Postmaster John Evan Jones said this week. In a continuing effort to reduce the number of impaired drivers traveling travel-ing on Utah's highways the Utah Highway Patrol (UHP) has stepped up their patrol of the three county area. During the past weekend officers made 11 alcohol related arrests. Nine of the 11 arrests were for driving driv-ing under the influence, one was for open container and one for possession posses-sion of alcohol by a minor. Officers also arrested an individual for possession of marijuana. Each year a large number of Utah residents are killed in alcohol related accidents and even a greater number are injured. UHP troopers with the Vernal district are concerned with the number of alcohol related accidents ac-cidents in the area. Four out of the five fatal accidents in the area since January have been alcohol related. Troopers said area residents can aid them in their efforts to reduce alcohol related accidents. Residents are asked to immediately report any driver they suspect has been drinking drink-ing to a law enforcement agency. Applications are now being accepted ac-cepted for persons interested in raising rais-ing a puppy for the Guide Dogs for the Blind program. Raising puppies to become guide dogs has been a popular 4-H program in the area for several years. Most of the youths that have taken the time to particpate in the program say it is a rewarding experience. Puppies in the upcoming program will be arriving from San Rafael, Calif., in September and will remain in local homes for approximately one year. In addition to the new puppies coming into the area, three puppies will be leaving Vernal. Puppies returning include Rosie, Vicki and Mabel. Rosie is being raised rais-ed by Sam Royce, Vicki by Mark Nalley and Mabel by Melodie Thompson. Thomp-son. All three of the puppies have been in the Vernal area since September of 1984. Flaxen is being raised by Todd Henrikson and will be returned in May. The screening process to determine deter-mine suitable candidates for the program pro-gram takes several weeks and persons per-sons interested in raising a guide dog should apply by Monday, Aug. 19. Applications Ap-plications and information on the program can be obtained from Sam Royce, 781-2149; or from Steven Cox at 781-0770.
