ERA, Bailers of Vernal and Strout of Roosevelt tied for first place in the UBIC Men's Open Round Robin Tournament, Saturday at 6-1. NEW UINTAH High School football coach Hank Nawahine captures cap-tures the ball for an force out at second base. Football practice will begin Monday, August 19 at Uintah High School. The first game will be against Union High School in Roosevelt, August 30. Eight teams compete and three garner first place 4y AUo "EacltU Only eight teams were entered in the Men's UBIC Open Round Robin Softball Tournament in Roosevelt, Saturday and almost half of the teams went home happy as the tournament tour-nament ended in a three-way tie for first place between Strout of Roosevelt, Bailers and ERA of Vernal Ver-nal at 61. Arctic Circle of Vernal and Frontier Grill of Roosevelt finished at 3-4. St. James of Vernal recorded a 2-5 mark. M & M and Ft. Duchesne turned in 1-6 marks. The tournament finished in a first place tie because the Bailers beat ERA, 19-6, but lost to Strout, 9-6 and ERA knocked off Strout, 13-10. ERA scored eight runs in the first inning in their game with Strout. Rod Anderson, Stuart Parker, Monty Lee, Todd Parker, Carlos Reed, Frank Young and two other players scored runs for ERA. Stuart and Todd Parker and Lee scored runs in the third and three more counters were scored in the fifth. The ERA team owned an 11-7 lead in the top of the sixth inning, but Strout scored one counter in the bottom bot-tom of the sixth. Paul Betts singled and scored for Strout. ERA poured in two more runs in the top of the seventh for an 1 1-7 lead. Lee tripled and scored on a single by Randy Smuin. T. Parker doubled and Smuin scored on a fly ball out by Reed. Strout added three runs in the bottom of the seventh to make the final score 13 to 10 in favor of ERA. The Bailers knocked off ERA, 19-6, to play a part in the three-way first place tie. Four runs were scored by the Bailers in the first inning and two more were added by Dave King and Ted Taylor in the fourth. The big inning inn-ing for the Bailers was the fifth when they scored 13 runs. ERA scored once in the first and four times in the second. se-cond. Strout scored two runs in the first inning in its win over the Bailers. Betts, Ace Davis, Robert Wcrry and Wayne Allred singled. Betts and Davis scored for Strout. Duchesne, St. James, Frontier Grill, Strout, M & M, Arctic Circle and lost to the Bailers. The Bailers beat ERA, M & M, St. James, Ft. Duchesne, Frontier Grill, Arctic Circle and lost to Strout. Strout beat St. James, Ft Duchesne, M & M, Bailers, Arctic Circle, Frontier Grill and lost to ERA. The Bailers and Frontier Grill turned in an exciting battle, but at the conclusion of the game the Bailers ended up grilling the Frontier Grill. 97. Ted Taylor flied out and King scored to break the tie. Bobby Smuin slugged a double and knocked in Nelson. John Perez grounded out, but Robert Downard netted a triple, which scored Smuin. Downard had a short stop at third as a few seconds later he scored on an error. Ron Baker singled, but Peterson Peter-son tripled in Baker with a 7-2 lead. Dave King flied out. Scoring action dried up In the next 2 1-2 innings and then the Bailers added add-ed one run in the top of the fifth for an 8 2 lead. Peterson doubled with two outs and scored on a single by D. King. Frontier Grill had been quiet for most of the game, but they started cooking in the Softball world as they fried the Vernal team with a five run eruption in the bottom of of the sixth inning, Renji Gayler led off with a walk and scored on a triple by Robert Urchk. Frontier Grill went down in order in the bottom of the seventh inning. Weird Game The weird game of the week would have to be the New York Yankees loss to the Chicago White Sox, Friday. Fri-day. The Yankees had .Bobby Meacham at second and Dale Bcrra at first base. Ricky Henderson hit a double over the centerfielder's head. It appeared the Yankees were going to score two runs, but Meacham remained re-mained frozen at second base. When he decided it was time to leave, Bcrra was almost on top of him. Meacham left the bag, tripped, almost fell down and started toward third base. Berra was only a few feet bt-hind Meacham and he was waving his hands telling him to get going. Meacham journeyed down the third base line and Berra decided he might as well as try and score. Meacham was tacged out at home and then catcher Carlton Fi.sk turned around and touched Berra for another out at home plate. The Yanks pained zero runs in the inning. The White Sox broke the tie and then New York's Dave Winfteld hit a home run with two out and two strikes to place the game in a tie once again.
