Show Prestressed concrete dikes By JOHN W.CANNON GREAT SALT LAKE - Boun tiful Architect Don Johnson has proposed using his new diking system for rebuilding the Syracuse Causeway and creating a Freshwater Farmington Bay. The technology would use prestressed, preformed concrete sections that would be put into place with a crane. The two parallel concrete walls would form the outside out-side of the dike and the space between be-tween them could be filled with inexpensive in-expensive sands dredged up from the Great Salt Lake. The proposed wall pile technology would present sigjiifi-cant sigjiifi-cant savings over conventional diking. dik-ing. Approximately three times as much material fill would be needed for a conventional dike and that material ma-terial would have to be excavated from either Antelope Island or somewhere along the Wasatch Front Johnson has been given permission permis-sion to build a test section of his diking system. The State Legislature has appropriated 100,000 dollars for the test which will be built on the Syracuse Causeway later this summer. Private donations of material and money will supplement the State's appropriation. "We hope to have construction underway by August said Johnson. If the technology proves successful suc-cessful it would represent tremendous tremen-dous savings to taxpayers in the rebuilding of the causeway. Steve Smoot, at large member of the Great Salt Lake Authority, said "Don Johnsons system is viable and . less expensive. It will save millions of dollars.
