Show Top-ranked Vikings continue win streak By BRET GALLACHER WASHINGTON TERRACE TER-RACE Viewmont silenced two crowds Friday night by beating Bonneville 58-54. The first was the boisterous crowd in Laker Gym, the second was the unbelievers who felt the Vikings' Vik-ings' winning streak would end at the hands of the talented Lakers. Clutch free throw shooting, along with several misses down the stretch by Bonneville ensured en-sured the Vikings would hold onto their number one ranking. "This is our biggest win of the year," said Viewmont coach Clyde Nelson. "Now we need to concentrate on forgetting about it and thinking about our next game." The Vikings quickly proved they deserve to be atop the standings stan-dings as they outscored Bonneville Bonne-ville 18-13 in the opening quarter. The period was highlighted by two long-range treys by John Robison along with another six points from point guard Jason Pitt. The Vikes needed big play from everyone with sixth man Jared Peterson sidelined with a severe sprain, and the early offensive burst from Pitt was a welcome sight for Coach Nelson. "Jason really picked it up tonight, to-night, not only shooting the ball, but I think he did a great job defending (Bonneville guard) Sivulich," said Nelson. The second quarter saw Viewmont stretch the lead to nine and the Viking faithful wondering what all the worrying was for. But Sivulich quickly squelched any thoughts of a blowout hitting two quick baskets to end the half 29-24. The third quarter started quickly for the Vikings, building their lead back to eight. Bonneville, Bonne-ville, however, went on an impressive im-pressive 8-0 run to tie the game 44-44 heading into the final quarter. Then with 3:22 remaining remain-ing Viewmont's Don Faux was fouled, sending him to the line for one-and-one. The first free throw was missed but Faux was able to battle for his own rebound re-bound and muscled in the two points. "When we didn't box him (Faux) out, and he put back his miss, that was a huge play in the game," said Bonneville coach Gary Alverson. The result was a four point lead for the Vikes, who apparently apparent-ly allowed themselves a few minutes to celebrate the play as Bonneville hit the next two baskets to knot the score once again. While giving Faux the second chance after his miss was the first Laker mistake, it certainly was not their last, or biggest. With 31 seconds left and the score still tied, Viewmont had possession, when a Laker guard fouled Robison. With the crowd noise at a deafening roar, and the pressure of a 12-game winning streak in his hands, the Viking guard calmly sank both shots. The remainder of the game found Bonneville shooting long-range long-range desperation shots and then fouling the Vikes, who converted con-verted two more free throws to I account for the final score. For the game Robison was fabulous for Viewmont, hitting four three pointers and a perfect four for four from the charity stripe as he scored a game high 22 points. Andy Jensen was as consistent as always, dominating the boards and accounting for 15 points. f ; I y - A - J V VIKING STANDOUT: Viewmont's Andy Jensen drives past Bonneville's Mike Porter in the Vikings' region win Friday.
