Show New law affects terminally ill prepare an advance directive. Help will be available Feb. 20 at the center for anyone interested in completing the directive forms. Help will be available also, to complete com-plete a financial power of attorney. There will be a $10 charge for this workshop. Forms are available for $1 for those who do not want help in completing the directive. For additional information, call 295-3479. Beginning Dec. 1, 1991, a new federal law went into effect to help persons notify others in advance and in writing what treatment they may want or wish to avoid if they are terminally ill and unable to ; make decisions concerning their care. The personal choice and Living ; Will Act identifies the following alternatives in the decision-making ; process. ; Special power of attorney that . consists of a written statement which gives legal authority to another an-other person to make health care 1 decisions on the patient's behalf when heshe is unable to do so due to illness or injury. ! A living will, which is a written ; statement that describes the patient's personal wishes about the . method and duration of treatment ; desired in the event of a terminal il- lness. '. The medical treatment plan is a I written statement which provides a summary of the patient's discus-l discus-l sions with hisher personal physi- cian regarding medical care. These directives enable patients lOto make legally valid decisions about future medical care, or they give the patient the right to refuse ; treatment while they are able to make a decision.
