Show Carriage horse owners should trade places with their animals I had hopes for Utah's "exploition of animals" image until un-til the commissioners meeting on Aug. 8 in Salt Lake. There were " many animals protectionists that expressed feelings of concern for the horses, plus their adding to downtown congestion, and traffic and pedestrian hazards. Their opinions opi-nions were: temperatures reaching up to 130 degrees on asphalt, and bitter winter temperatures, no easy accessability to water, dangers' of exhaust fumes to the horses' lungs, damage to their tendons, long hours, and overall unnatural activities ac-tivities far these over 2,000 pound animals. Natun illy, the drivers and owners told of their love for the horses. The proof would be how about them changing places with the horses? The animals have no choice of their own, but to stand in the heat or cold for indefinite periods between fares. But, the driver is always shaded or protected from the weather. Mr. Crow of the Salt Lake Animal Control is overlooking the horses, and I'm sure doing a good job. He stated, one day in July to have pulled five horses off the road. If the horses are so well treated why . would they need to be pulled? The "loving" drivers should certainly know when the horses are next to heat prostration, and foaming at the mouth, that it's time to quit! Mr. Crow can't be everywhere, and there are 17 carriages. This is so unnecessary. People managed before the carriages. It . doesn't' add to Salt Lake's image, except negatively. This is a self interest in-terest group of animal exploiters, interested in-terested only in profit, and encouraged en-couraged by the uninformed politicians politi-cians of Salt Lake.- Many people have stated 'that they avoid downtown Salt Lake ' because of die , miserable looking carriage horses, and the tfaffic"" hazards. I agree. These beautiful creatures should be . in a good -:, pasture, not suffering because of misplaced vanity and the almighty buck. - I, ; i . " Leigh Engelbrecht ; Bountiful . i4 r |
