Show Why did U.S. West finance Showdown Classic tourney Dear Editor, I would like thousands, of customersof U,S.West (Baby Bell) to withhold at least $1 per month from current telephone bills until the utility can explain to us what benefit "we obtained from" their sponsorship, of the recent Showdown Classic golf tournament tourna-ment The utility spent nearly $8,00p for four full-color pages of advertising advertis-ing in a program distributed to those who attended the event plus an estimated $30 to $40 thousand as a corporate sponsor of the event, and an undetermined amount for television tele-vision commercials broadcast dur-..ing dur-..ing the event . .' All of this for the benefit of an elite few golfers, only one of whom might spend more than a few hundred hun-dred dollars in Utah. With the unconscionable profits this utility has extracted from its ' customers in ihepaslfew yearsit is , v . time the Utah Public Service Commission Com-mission takes a hard look at expenditures expen-ditures that benefit so few. I would suggest that U.S. West contribute a lie amount of corporate cor-porate funds (not that solicited from employees) to the United Fund or the homeless or the underpaid teachets of Utah instead of thousands to fhe favored few on the golf course.
